"This is the first of 57 performances," she gushed to the cheering crowd at Portland's Civic Stadium. "I can't tell you how great it feels to be here, to be starting this." McLachlan and the other performers at the Lilith Fair's inaugural couldn't have asked for better weather or a better audience. The seven-hour outdoor extravaganza featured ten artists on three stages, and except for breaks between the last three main stage acts, it proceeded so seamlessly there was barely enough time for the audience to get from one performance to the next. The main stage show started with Sinead O'Connor, sporting a dark buzz cut and wearing a loose t white shirt with the slogan "Jesus is Coming . . .Try to Look Busy" written across it. She took the stage by storm, playfully thanking the audience with high-ended "Thank YOOOOOUUUs" and tossing in an off hand comment or two between songs. Introducing the poignant "Last Days Of Our Acquaintance" she began to say men were useless save for one thing, but then stopped herself when she realized a good portion of her audience thought men were useless, period. "Oops," she giggled. "I think I'll leave that alone." The audience, in fact, was much more gender and/or proclivity balanced than one might expect. There were plenty of lesbian couples, young and old, and single women cruising other women, and women just bonding, but there were also moms and daughters, dads and daughters and more than a few male/female couples. It seemed no matter what your orientation, this was an excellent date event. Erykah Badu's set began with her band vamping for a couple of minutes before her regal star entrance. Her performance was much more subtly-structured than O'Connor's, starting slowly and gradually building. Her voice was reminiscent of Billy Holiday's, but as the set progressed she began funking it up, dedicating songs to her chief musical inspiration, Chaka Khan. "Apple Tree" had an especially delicious groove. Natalie Merchant, on the other hand, moved like a gypsy dancing around a campfire, abandoning herself to the rhythms of "Carnival" and "Wonder." As she locomoted through her 30 minutes, layers of clothing came off and her thick black hair came down. Merchant's gyrations had the audience responding in kind. As the day progressed, the audience was increasingly swept up in communal motion. The Indigo Girls embraced their new rock side as much as their more familiar folkie stance, trading mandolins and banjos for electric guitars throughout their segment. Emily Saliers in particular pulled off some very convincing leads, especially on "This Train Revised" and Neil Young's "Rocking In The Free World," on which the duo and band were once again joined by McLachlan and every member of Belgium's K's Choice. It was also the only number where a man (Choice's writer/guitarist Gert Bettens) took a lead vocal. K's Choice, fronted by the intriguing Sarah Bettens, was arguably the high point of the second stage roster. The band introduced songs from its new release, Cocoon Crash, but the pinnacle was Bettens getting physical with her rendition of the heroin-heavy "I'm Not An Addict." Everytime she began hopping in place, the audience squealed. But it was earlier second stage performer Billie Myers who established the day's hard-rocking tone. She prowled the strange forbiddingly, and climbed the scaffolding, singing from on high. Her barroom songs may not have been as sophisticated as Bettens', but her energy level was undeniable. Still, it was McLachlan everyone wanted most. When she came on stage early in the Indigo Girls' set, the audience reaction could have tipped the Richter scale. She brought her glamour and her celebrity, but she also brought her voice, adding a wonderful third harmony on "The Water Is Wide." Coming on for her own set later in the day, when it was dark enough for her stage lighting to actually matter, she stuck mostly to material from her latest release, Surfacing. "Building A Mystery," no surprise, was one of the most dynamic pieces, especially her almost cackling reading of the line that describes her lover as a "beautiful and f....d up man." The response from the house was immediate and overwhelming. Ultimately, though, it was "Possession," the last song of a too-short set, that the audience was waiting for. Wanting to possess Sarah McLachlan was something everyone could relate to. It was clear that all present - women and men alike - would have happily taken her home. - -- Tom Phalen - -------------------------------------------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans - -or-- unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans-digest ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Jul 1998 09:50:23 EDT From: AMCFLND1@aol.com Subject: [lilith-fair-fans] Sheryl Crow 7.2.98 12:00 EDT Sheryl Crow Sets Date For New Album Sheryl Crow While you won't see her on this summer's Lilith Fair, you will be seeing Sheryl Crow in record stores later this year. Crow is gearing up to release her third album, titled "Riverwide," on September 15, and will precede the album's release with its first single, a song called "My Favorite Mistake," in early August. For "Riverwide," Crow brought in a few notable guest musicians, including Wilco's Jay Bennett and Wendy Melvoin of Wendy & Lisa fame. This time out, Crow also tried to be more personal with her lyrics, as she explained in a written statement announcing the impending release. "The lyrics are written more in the first person," Crow said. "Much of my writing on the first two records was narrative. This record isn't really that. It doesn't draw upon an alter ego or a character to tell a story. It's mostly my own feelings about what's happened over the past few years, the changes in my life and the changes in me personally." Crow will deliver her follow-up to her 1996 self-titled sophomore effort in September courtesy of A&M Records. The news of the release will no doubt come as a relief to fans who had hoped to catch Crow on one of the 11 Lilith Fair dates; the singer canceled citing exhaustion (see "Sheryl Crow Bows - -------------------------------------------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans - -or-- unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans-digest ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Jul 1998 09:52:21 +0000 From: karen17@juno.com (Karen V. And like Homer Simpson, the answer hits you: Doh! Because she'd blow Our Divine Queen Sarah off the stage. The American-born, British-based singer songwriter is born partly out of the McLachlan mould. But she rocks harder, writes grittier and can match Sarah's songwriting hook for hook. It's guitar-based stuff with powerful melodies and it comes rolling out of power and passion. The opening trio of songs alone is breathtaking: London Rain slaps you in the face, Blood of Me pins you up against the wall and makes you listen, and Heart And Shoulder builds from airy electronica before exploding into a full, driving ballad. What's most impressive is that Nova sustains the energy over 14 songs and an hour's worth of material. She can rock as hard as she feels like and switch effortlessly to that airy, ethereal Sarah thing, as if she were singing in the shower. by Mike Blanchfield Interesting...... Also, on a totally different topic: Dayna Manning, Virgil Brown and Holly Cole will be performing on Radio Sonic on CBC TWO (103.3 FM) from 7pm-midnite tonite happy 4th of July to all the Americans out there! luv Shawna =) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------------------------------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans - -or-- unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans-digest ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Jul 1998 13:09:32 EDT From: SarahMcL99@aol.com Subject: Re: [lilith-fair-fans] sarah on cover of ym I would also be Verrry interested in a copy of the YM with Sarah on the cover..... the Canadian one i guess. I'm going to the 7/16 show in NY so if anyone wants to talk about that, great. But here's something that should provoke some discussion. As you know, it's always interesting & informative to see what other artists have to say about the Lilith Fair Phenomenon. I thought you'd get a kick out of this. Here's what a heavy metal legend had to say about it in the June 5 issue of Goldmine. "I've always been one to say that as soon as you see a lot of female success, the hard rock scene is hurting and that there is a change coming soon. Girl music always seems to fill a void at some particular point; I don't care for it very much. I think some of these girls are very talented and they sing well, but to me they're just chicks. Hard Rock & Heavy Music has to be done by guys. Let's face it , they're chicks. So, at the moment, I feel something is going to happen, the girl thing might last a little bit longer." - Ronnie James Dio Not necessarily the most PC opinion, but an honest one from a respected music veteran & accomplished singer/lyricist. I just thought you would find it amusing. Thoughts or opinions anybody?
