Someone recently posted that they hit it in a notebook, and the security didn't even look at it. If you do get a bootleg, I'd love to get a copy. :) Maybe we could trade. Thanks, Beth K. << hey people, I need some help. I too am going to lilith fair and need some help as for what to take and how early should we be there. What is a DAT recorder? Are you allowed to bring cameras or do I need to stuff it somewhere? I want to record a bootleg of it, but what kind of recorder should I use. I have a small dictating recorder that I took to the cranberries concert, but it didnt work to good. All that I can hear is us screaming and singing. Should I use a normal tape recorder, would that be good? Sorry about all the questions but I am getting nervous about it. I dont want it to come because I know it will be over soon and just become a memory, but then again i want to hear it. If you can give me any other tips as to were to be and stuff like that please let me know. I will be there Monday July 6th at Pine knob in Detroit. Women, supportive males, and children gathered-ironically at the home of one of college football's largest events-to celebrate sisterhood through music. By the looks of the crowded stands, most of the 30,000 ticket holders lasted until the last melodic note was sounded at 10:30 p.m. Main stage acts started promptly, never hitting the stage more than a few minutes off schedule, and made the most of their 50-minute sets. Tour organizer and performer Sarah McLachlan has learned a lot from last year's experience with her own stage presence showing tremendous growth. Her enthusiasm for the event showed through as she pranced around in her beat-up tennis shoes and summed up her feelings for the night with a dumbfounded, "Fucking A." Her normal structured and atmospheric songs like "Building A Mystery" and "Possession" were injected with a new life through faster rhythms, scatting, acoustic guitar, and bongos. She proved that less is more with a heart-wrenching solo rendition of "Angel" accompanied by only a piano. Despite being the headliner, McLachlan made an earlier appearance with the Indigo Girls. These women know a thing or two about performing live and giving it 100%. They tore through guitar-heavy versions of tracks like "Galileo." Sinead O'Conner guested on a 10-minute "Chickenman" that was spruced up with harmonica by Blues Traveler's John Popper. Shawn Colvin and McLachlan harmonized on "The Water Is Wide." Continuing the improvisational unity and capping off a powerful mid-show appearance, the amped folk duo was joined by most of the day's players including Billie Myers, Tara MacLean (the next Jewel?), Colvin, and even Ellen Degeneres on "Closer To Fine" and a charged cover of Neil Young's "Rockin' In The Free World." Natalie Merchant, who was noticeably missing from the Indigo Girls' campfire, was a disappointment with her primadonna attitude, dull delivery of "Carnival" and "Jealousy," and her incessant barefoot twirling. The Lady In Red did up the ante with a tortured rendition of "Ophelia" that ended with an eerie spoken-word sample and the first verse "My How We've Grown," which she played at the piano but claimed to have forgotten the rest. One fan, who probably appreciated it a little too much, flung a bouquet of sunflowers, hitting the artist square in the face and bringing on several minutes of "Is my lip bleeding?" commentary from Merchant. Diva Erykah Badu brought a breath of funk to an otherwise top 40/modern rock line-up. She arrived to her own intro, burned incense, and paraded around in a feather-boa coat, platform shoes, and a headdress. During her groovy service, she touched on the hits like "On and On" and "Apple Tree," covered Chaka Khan, and spread the gospel of Baduizm mid-song. The audience, who seemed thrown off by the heavy bass at first, was discussing the meaning of her decorative ankh and singing along by the time she got to "Tyrone." Colvin's dull set focused on crowd pleasers like "Sunny Came Home" and flat covers of "Summertime" or "All Right Now." The very pregnant singer (current Lilith dates will be her last shows for the year.) was aglow as she announced that she was having a girl. The audience erupted in pro-girl cheers. O'Connor, who stepped in when Sheryl Crow backed out of the tour, followed Colvin's performance and put concertgoers in ready-to-rock mode. She plowed through her best catalog material - a fast-paced "Emperor's New Clothes," a cello-accented "Jackie," "Last Day Of Our Acquaintance," and "Noting Compares 2 U." Despite laying low for the last few years, O'Conner's voice soared from high to higher without ever losing its passion or power. Second stage acts like Belgium's K's Choice, who turned in a no-nonsense rocking set, and Britain's Billie Myers, who got everyone singing along to her up-and-coming blues pop single, "Kiss The Rain," held their own on second stages. But there is still room for improvement at the all-women's festival should McLachlan organize a third tour next summer-like more vegetarian food selections for the politically correct fans and more variation in musical genres. There is no reason that Missy Elliot or Me'Shell Ndegeocello couldn't be on the same bill as Badu. Although the shows are already big fundraisers for local charities and the booths are filled with good causes, why not let sponsors or charities speak to the attentive audiences during the dead times between acts? It would be more efficient and progressive to tell attendants how to stay involved once the day is over, where the money goes, and who benefits. As a beautiful end to a beautiful day, the leading ladies, their bands, and family members (Badu held son, Seven, in her arms.) rejoined McLachlan on stage for a communal encore. Appropriately, they chose to sing Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." Badu's soulful voice was the closest match to the original, but watching these difference-making women sing the powerful lyrics captured the real meaning of the day - the whole is more than a sum of its parts and a voice is too powerful a thing to waste.
