Some of the female acts that were more well-known than Sarah at the beginning of Lilith Fair haven't been very supportive. Chalk some of it up to jealousy (that they didn't organize something like Lilith themselves) and career neurosis (that Lilith gave Sarah a huge popularity and press coverage boost). Be sure to get out there and have a great day listening to some awesome music, and enjoying the time spent with friends and family, etc. I'm sure you all will, but sometimes you just have to remind some people. ;) For those of you who will only be seeing one of the shows of the Lilith Fair tour at a later date this summer, you should take the time to check out the official Lilith Fair web site, as they will be adding interviews, photos, movie clips and basic daily overviews from each concert to the web site a few days after each show. Look for the Lilith Fair multimedia crew (better known as the talented NETTMEDIA staff) at each concert, as they will be carrying around cameras to generally document as many of the highlights from each Lilith stopover, and will also be interviewing you, the fans, in some instances. So there ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ =================================================================== Hello all, Ready for my big ass Lilith Review? Here goes! Lilith Fair '98 Civic Stadium Portland, OR The Artists: Sarah McLachlan Natalie Merchant The Indigo Girls Erykah Badu Sinead O'Connor K's Choice Tara MacLean Billie Myers Sinead Lohan Essence Nefretiti Jones 6:00 AM 6/19/98 Holy Crap! It's 6:00 already. Damn Alarm! I fly out of bed wake up Carey, "Go take shower Carey, we're late!" I wake up my brother Jeff, "Wake up, sleepyhead! we're late!". I run down, grab the laundry, run into kitchen, make big egg breakfast for all. "Carey's out of the shower, your turn Jeff!" I proceed to make 5 PBJ sandwiches, throw in a handful of string cheese, some drinks, and a box of crackers. I stuff breakfast into my mouth as I do this. Jeff is done, I beat them both by taking a 4.5 minute shower. Throw on clothes, grab blankets, grab the food, lets go!! 6:45 AM 6/19/98 As we drive to the Stadium, the local pop station The Beat 107.5, is having a stupid contest to win tickets today's show. They pick people to burn their bras to win tickets to the show, a chance to goto the Vancouver show and a chance to win a signed guitar and musicbook by Sarah. Neat, but whatever. I guess us guys are out of luck on this one. We get there and discover, yes there is NO parking near the Civic for at least 4 blocks. So I drop off Carey and Jeff, they grab the clothes and food. Near us is a sound booth for The Beat 107.5 and I ask where the nearest parking is at. "I dunno" she says "but, if I give you guys T-Shirts, will you wear them inside?" Silence. "SURE!" we all chime in. Hey, free shirts! of course I'm not going to wear it inside you sillys, that would be blatantly selling out and participating in a major corporate advertisement marketing scheme. I'm going to wear my Lilith shirt instead. 7:30 AM 6/19/98 After totally lucking out and finding free parking about 4 blocks away, I arrive at the gate, greeted by Doug, April and a guy from Saskatchewan (I forget your name sorry :-| ) It turns out that they've secretly labeled the tickets, which are all general admission, Floor and Stand. This sucks, we check are tickets, whew, Floor. So there are like 20 people in line already and we just wait. People start to trickle in. Tour busses roll by, we wave at them. TV crews and journalists walk by, going to the press conference. Starbucks comes by and gives us free Ice Cream. Another Fumbler, Cathy, meets and sits with us. Time passes as it always does when your waiting..... 1:00 PM 6/19/98 Much time has passed, not much has happened, the usual trips to the bathroom, McDonalds and the car. We're all getting excited, especially April. She's starting to get more excited, and then Sarah does her sound check! We all run toward the gate, to listen. The sound check gets everyone really anxious and now there are hundreds and hundreds of people outside. Here's where the hell starts. Ticketmaster has decided that since there are Floor tickets and Stand tickets, they are going to give the Floor people white wristbands to make it easier for the security people to recognize the floor holders and stand holders. This is actually a great Idea, BUT, they never made any of us aware of it until the last second and even then, no one knew what was going on. So a hundred or so people make a mad dash to the table to exchange their floor tickets for a wrist band and run back to their place in line. We lost our place by a few people but not too bad. 2:00 PM 6/19/98 The doors are open!! We all make a mad dash for the seats, April get there before the rest of us and saves us a row. When I get there, she takes off and sees if she can find closer ones. She comes back, no luck. We actually got really decent seats. At this point Carey and I go off to the Village and check the booths. There are many as usual, lot's of food, clothing jewelry, Starbucks is a huge player in the Lilith game this year, as well as Volkswagen (they had a new bug there) Goddess nail elixir, www.excite.com, Biore, MuchMusic, Vh1, which was taping that day, Tower Records, Levi's, Kodak, and a number of local radio stations. The the Nettwerk and Murmurs booths were in full swing and Cathy and Leanne were at the helm. (Leanne is a cutie!) I bought a Nettwerk shirt and Carey bought a really pretty Sarah necklace. And now a word to the wise: BRING YOUR OWN FOOD IF POSSIBLE. The best plan of action is eat food at the booths the early part of the day, and then as the main artists start to come on, eat the food that you brought. This is because it's pretty much guaranteed that the food booths will run out of food and if you wait in like for food you are a fool. You WILL miss some of the artists and you WILL stand in line for hours and you WILL get pissed off. Smile! :-) 2:30 PM 6/19/98 Levis had their contest winners play here, Essence and Nefretiti Jones. (yes their parents really did name them that) They we're pretty good, I guess they both sell capacity shows in Cali. Also playing here was Sinead Lohan, which I missed because I was making my way to the Second stage. 3:20 PM 6/19/98 Here we go to see Lhasa. Pretty amazing stuff, she's got a very sultry voice and demeanor on stage. They have a track on the Lilith Double CD. People we're clapping and dancing. I've always loved ethnic music. 4:10 PM 6/19/98 Same stage, we have Billie Myers. For some reason they we're having some technical difficulties, but what a show! She's definitely a rock star, she was laughing and running up an down the front signing autographs and giving kisses away to her fans. Then when she sang, she was all over! she went to the other side of the stage to sing to the other people and came back around and weaved in and out of her band members, she even climbed up one of the supports on the stage about 10 feet above us and was swinging out as she was singing. She leapt off of it and landed on the stage and kept singing, never missing a beat. She ended her set with a very uptempo version of "Kiss the Rain". We decided to run back over to the Village stage and catch Tara. 4:25 PM 6/19/98 So we get to Tara. There are many people there already waiting for her to start. When she came on we're all ready for her. Bill Bell sure has let his hair grow out from the last time I saw him. Tara came out and many of the crowd we're just sitting or kneeling on the grass in front of the stage. It was cute, it reminded me of preschool when all the little kids would kneel down in front of the teacher as she would sing or read a book, the children watching intently. She opened with Jordan and then did Red and finished with Evidence. Breathtaking, as always. We went to Tower Records where she signed April's shirt. 4:45 PM 6/19/98 We went back to the seats to see Sinead O'Connor. I'm going to have to say the Sinead O'Connor wasn't the highlight of the show. It wasn't that the music wasn't good or the fact that I'm not a big fan or anything, it's mainly that she doesn't put on a show. She just wasn't interested or something and she kept making fun of the crowd. Oh well, you win some, you lose some. 5:15 6/19/98 Next was K's Choice, which I must say was just awesome. They've been touring for that last couple of years and it's pretty evident as they gave a very tight performance. Their songwriting style is interesting because it's done by the lead singer, Sarah Bettens and her brother the lead guitarist. Lots of great harmonies and catchy songs. They ended with "Not An Addict" which everyone sang and danced to. 5:45 PM 6/19/98 Erykah Badu. Absolutely amazing. I've never been a huge fan of R&B, but she put on a great show. Her drummer and bass player we're just locked together the entire time, and they did some amazing playing. The neat thing about it was, with that style of music you are able to spontaneously change the songs as you go, so they evolve as the performance goes on. She was able to throw a vocal line over to her backup singers and have them go on that to create a tune on the fly. Great communication in this band. And she has a great voice, just clean and smooth and has excellent control. So there's another CD I have to buy. :-) 6:50 PM 6/19/98 The Indigo Girls. This is the second time I'd seen them and they we're just as impressive this time around. They had Sarah come out and sing several verses on "Water Is Wide" and towards the end, they had Sarah and K's Choice come out and join them in their rendition of Neil Young's "Rockin' In the Free World". It was awesome! 8:00 PM 6/19/98 Next was Natalie Merchant. She started out with a slow piano version of "Wonder" and proceed to pick up the tempo. Only problem was, the sound crew couldn't get the mike for the snare drum to work. We we're close enough that we could here it acoustically though. She's cute, she likes to dance and skip like a little kid while she sings. She did the song "Ophelia" and at the end it had some weird sound effects, and I was that they had what looked like an old Mellotron, and she was triggering sounds and voices from it. She wore a interesting looking purple and orange dress which fluttered in the wind. In all it was a great show, ending with "Kind and Generous" 9:10 PM 6/19/98 Sarah finally came on and we broke out the glowsticks. She started off by announcing that they would be trying a new song tonight. She opened with "Adia" and then proceeded to play "Black and White" which was awesome! I've been waiting so long for them to play this one live! She then did "Angel", "Possession", "Ice Cream", "Elsewhere" and she did an encore of "Sweet Surrender". In all it was a wonderful day spent with the fiancée and the Fumblers. We were going to meet Doug and the others afterwards, but I lost my brother and had to meet him back at the car. Anyway, It was much fun, I can't wait until Vancouver!!!! ---Chris - -------------------------------------------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans - -or-- unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans-digest ------------------------------ End of lilith-fair-fans-digest V1 #17 *************************************
