(Someone doing larger-scale production of CDs, on the other hand....why not just tattoo a target on your ass?) C) the management of some lilith acts may be subscribed to this list. If you are going to do anything like this, keep all the details in private email, and in public posts only refer to the trading of recordings. Selling them is a good way to get nuked, fast. By the way, there is not going to be a thread on this issue. Nor is there going to be an argument as to the legality or illegality of unauthorized distribution of live recordings. I don't need to consult an attorney on this issue. I am one. And this issue is asked and answered within the first couple of weeks of any Intellectual Property class. The unauthorized copying and distribution of another's intellectual property (which includes live performances) is illegal and subject to criminal and civil penalties. Whether the recordings are sold or distributed for free makes no difference as to the illegality and merely effects the penalties to be assessed. However, this is just my moral/ethical side talking since I am not a lawyer. I really do think that it is illegal though. At school, I have access to a CD burner too and they don't allow you to make copies of certain things like programs and stuff because it is illegal. I always see promo CDs at used recored stores with printing on them that says the CD is for promotional use only and it's illegal to sell it...blah, blah, blah. Personally, I would NEVER sell a bootleg of mine and still feel a bit unethical trading them, though I have done before and will do it again as long as the person I trade with promises not to sell it or trade with people who might sell copies. I am interested in hearing from people in the know about this issue though. On Mon, 1 Jun 1998 Noddaclue@aol.com wrote: > Okay, Hi! Then there was a behind-the-scenes of the Vogue photo shoot. Then, the big moment, SARAH!!!!!!!!!!!!! no announcement, just her on the piano saying "What a great crowd!!" everyone started roaring. she did only 4 songs too: Aida, building a mystery, Possession and Sweet Surrender. and since i have no chance to see Lilith this year, this one event sated me very much. rod - -------------------------------------------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans - -or-- unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans-digest ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Jun 1998 13:53:26 PDT From: "Ben-Zion Caspi" Subject: Re: [lilith-fair-fans] nettwerk newsletter/letterman >From owner-lilith-fair-fans@smoe.org Mon Jun 1 18:21:20 1998 >Received: from smoe.org [204.167.97.154] > by siren.shore.net with esmtp (Exim) > id 0ygflN-0005qa-00; Mon, 1 Jun 1998 21:21:17 -0400 >Received: from localhost (daemon@localhost) > by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) with SMTP id VAA22361; > Mon, 1 Jun 1998 21:20:30 -0400 (EDT) >Received: by smoe.org (bulk_mailer v1.5); Mon, 1 Jun 1998 21:20:29 - -0400 >Received: (from majordom@localhost) > by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id VAA22347 > for lilith-fair-fans-outgoing; Mon, 1 Jun 1998 21:19:59 -0400 (EDT) >Received: from int-mail.fl.net.au (root@int-mail.syd.fl.net.au [202.181.0.28]) > by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-relay2) with ESMTP id VAA22077 > for ; Mon, 1 Jun 1998 21:11:15 -0400 (EDT) >Received: from shell1.syd.fl.net.au (sherlyn@shell1.syd.fl.net.au [202.181.0.30]) by int-mail.fl.net.au (2.0/fl) with ESMTP id LAA22690 for ; Tue, 2 Jun 1998 11:11:25 +1000 (EST) >Received: from localhost (sherlyn@localhost) > by shell1.syd.fl.net.au (8.8.8/8.8.5) with SMTP id LAA28821 > for ; Tue, 2 Jun 1998 11:11:07 +1000 (EST) >X-Authentication-Warning: shell1.syd.fl.net.au: sherlyn owned process doing -bs >Date: Tue, 2 Jun 1998 11:11:07 +1000 (EST) >From: Sherlyn Koo >X-Sender: sherlyn@shell1.syd.fl.net.au >To: lilith-fair-fans@smoe.org >Subject: [lilith-fair-fans] nettwerk newsletter/letterman >Message-ID: >MIME-Version: 1.0 >Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII >Sender: owner-lilith-fair-fans@smoe.org >Reply-To: lilith-fair-fans@smoe.org >Precedence: bulk > > >Hey folks - > >How do you subscribe to the Nettwerk newsletter that >people have been forwarding here? Not to make this an entire thread or anything [seeing as how this list mainly bases on Lilith Fair oriented subjects].. Not having Comedy Central, I don't get to see South Park as often as others in this area. [TCI Cable does -not- carry this channel] I have only seen and heard snippets but from what I have seen [okay, I admit it: I went to Blockbuster and rented the video volume to see what the hype was all about], I'm okay with. But not for children. Being a mother of one, and still a 'teenager' at that [I'm 19], I would not want my daughter watching this show. However, I remember watching 'The Simpsons' and parents hating it then, too. I find South Park mildly amusing, but I can't say I hate it. However, I commend Comedy Central for not airing it until the later hours. I believe in free speech and all that, but I do feel that there should be some limitations on what children see. I feel that younger kids and teens tend to follow and imitate that which they adore [hey.. I wanted to be Madonna when I was 10. :) ], and that can be a problem. In the town where I live, the schools are having a major problem with school dress codes in public schools.. logo's and music shirts are banned.. and I can understand why, I remember not having a single pair of Guess? jeans in junior high and being an outcast because of it. Stupid, eh? Anyway. this went way off subject, and I apologize for this turning into a rant. :) Just wanted to throw my $0.02 in. However since this show is the highest rated show that Comedy Central has EVER had and given the enormity of it's success, the answer to your "who likes it anyway," question would have to be millions of people. Of course it has it "disgusting" aspects --my parents think that some of what ehy show is terrible (they say with a tsk) but whenever they watch parts of it, they always end up laughing. THe creators of this showhave repeatedly said that it is NOT INTENDED FOR CHILDREN and have the show rated M for mature audiences. But we all know that if kids want to watch something like that, they will find a way. Personally, I think that the show should be on a bit later than it is but it is but it's not as though it's on at seven pm or anything. There are a lot worse shows out there that are on cable--HBO, SHOWTIME, CINEMAX have very raunchy shows. I think that those are disgusting so I son't watch them. Sure, some people like it but I can't see how a person can > be normal and like South Park at the same time. > Now, here is the part that really bothered me. While I completely understand your dislike for the show, I think that this comment was just a bit uncalled for. What is "normal" anyway? I would say that since the show is such a huge hit and that people from all over the country and Canada appear to be fans of the show--including such stars as George Clooney, Jay Leno, and Jerry Seinfeld -- that to like the show, would be a normal thing. It's a funny show. I don't know how many episodes you have seen but there are some incredibly funny things in that show and they have definitely taken the bold route with the humor. If you don't like it and think that it is sick...well, you aren't alone. But if you do like it, well, join the club, and believe me, it's a huge club at that. Plus, you are in good company. I also think that if you do like the show, you would be perfectly normal. > Maybe it's just my imagination... > Sorry 'bout this but I just had to say what I think > > > :-) > Me too. :) Lisa > > > > _____________________________________________________________________ > You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. > Get completely free e-mail from Juno at http://www.juno.com > Or call Juno at (800) 654-JUNO [654-5866] > > > > > -------------------------------------------------------- > To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: > unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans > -or-- > unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans-digest > - -------------------------------------------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans - -or-- unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans-digest ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Jun 1998 22:06:56 -0400 From: Jason and Jill Greshes Subject: Re: [lilith-fair-fans] totally off subject > Ok, here is the rest of what I wanted to add... > > On Sun, 7 Jun 1998, Sharon D Moeller wrote: > > > Somebody said: > > >>I LOVE Southpark...another new episode tonight > > > > OF course you are perfectly entitled to your opinion and I am sure that > there are others who would agree with you. Hi guys, listowner here. My hard drive crashed a couple of weeks ago and then the nitwit I bought the thing from installed Windblows 98, which promptly crashed all over the goddamned place, and required a massive amount of effort to uninstall and replace with old windows 95. Anyway, although lilith-fair-fans isn't a completely on-topic list, it also isn't a "totally off subject" list, and certainly isn't a place to discuss the merits of South Park. The idea behind this list was to give people a place to discuss lilith fair so that lilith posts wouldn't overwhelm existing lists. The idea wasn't to allow all the off-topic posting happening on some other lists to spread to a new venue. I've had lots and lots and lots of unsubscribes from lilith-fair-fans because of the amount of off-topic posts. Please, try to limit somewhat the amount of chat on this list. She talks a bit about Lilith Fair. It's got a large, lovely pic of Sarah, similar to the one on the cover of the Adia single, except she's in a different pose and does not have red lipstick on. Here's the interview: ========================================= THE FAIR-EST OF THEM ALL *Sarah McLachlan is a muse with a message* Sure, her voice could make a grown man cry like a baby and her sweet face has been on the cover of practically every magazine in the universe, but Sarah McLachlan didn't always have it so good. Before she was a folk-rock goddess and the brain behind the mother of all music festivals (that would be Lilith Fair), she was an awkward, frizzy-headed, crooked-toothed kid struggling with her own growing pains. Through it all, she found the courage and confidence to stay true to herself and her music, which is totally obvious if you've given the grammy-winning songs on her latest album, Surfacing (Arista), a listen. Find out what else this Lilith flower is all about. ~A LOT OF WOMEN LOOK UP TO YOU BECAUSE YOUR MUSIC INSPIRES THEM. WHO'S YOUR INSPIRATION? "I admire anybody who has a lot of respect for themselves, a lot of humility and the power to basically do good things. On a personal level, the person I look up to most is my mom. She gave up her career for us kids. It was a different world back then. Women weren't expected to have careers; they were expected to stay home." ~SOME PEOPLE THINK CREATING THE ALL-FEMALE LILITH FAIR WAS SORT OF AN "UP YOURS" TO GUY-DOMINATED FESTIVALS LIKE LOLLAPALOOZA. WHAT'S THE REAL STORY? "I would hate to say I organized Lilith Fair for reactionary reasons [like because other festivals excluded women artists], although it certainly did come into play. Mostly it stemmed from a desire to put on a great music festival, and there are so many women out there making great music. I wanted to celebrate that the music world is finally opening up to women." ~FINALLY IS RIGHT. YOU'VE BEEN SIGNING AND WRITING FOR 13 YEARS. A LOT OF PEOPLE WOULD'VE GIVEN UP OR BURNED OUT AFTER SUCH A LONG HAUL. WHAT'S YOUR SECRET? "I have a lot of confidence in who I am, because a large part of my songwriting is figuring out who the hell I am. There are so many perceptions and expectations placed on you in the music industry, and unless you're really strong and believe in yourself, you can get pulled in directions that aren't necessarily true to who you are." ~THAT'S HARD TO DO, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU'RE GROWING UP AND EVERYONE IS TRYING TO FIT IN WITH WHAT'S COOL. HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN SO SELF-ASSURED? "No way. I had pretty low self-esteem. My own lack of self-worth and self-confidence was the biggest obstacle I had to overcome. I finally realized that I was good at something--art and music. That really fueled me." ~SPEAKING OF ENDURANCE, YOU'RE THE ONLY PERFORMER IN LILITH FAIR WHO HEADLINES EVERY SHOW ON THE TOUR. HOW DO YOU DEAL? "I'm a big believer in having time to myself. When you're out on the road, you have no privacy. I've finally gotten to a point where I can say, 'I'm going to take two hours in the afternoon that are just for me.' When I'm home it's a really different thing. People ask me 'Where are you going on vacation?' and it's like, 'I'm going home [to Vancouver, BC, Canada].' It's my sanctuary." ~SO WHAT DO YOU DO DURING YOUR "ME TIME"? "I work out pretty much every day. It's really great for my energy level. I bought a StairMaster and a stationary bike, and I had cases built for them so I could take them on the road when I'm touring. They're set up in one of the dressing rooms every day. It's amazing. It's great meditation, because I do nothing but push myself and get really mindless. It's good therapy." ~WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN YOU FINALLY STOP TOURING? "I'm going to float--I have absolutely no plans at all." *If you missed last year's Lilith Fair, you can still experience it on the live double-CD, Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music (Artista.) Don't miss this summer's second annual Lilith Fair, featuring Erykah Badu, Natalie Merchant, Bonnie Raitt, Missy Elliot, Sinead O'Connor and more. "I have been working nonstop for two years," Crow later said in a statement released by her label, A&M. "I need some time at home to regroup." In the last six months alone, Crow has headlined her own tour, and opened for the likes of the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. She's also managed to put in some studio time, laying down tracks for a new album, the follow-up to 1996's Sheryl Crow, which should be out this fall. At press time, there was no word on who would replace Crow for the five Lilith dates. Sheryl Crow's scheduled Lilith Fair performances June 20¯The Gorge, George, Wash. June 24¯Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, Calif. June 27¯Rose Bowl, Los Angeles, Calif. June 28¯Desert Sky Pavilion, Phoenix, Ariz. Hello to all I know and love, Got a question: What is the definition of folk music??? Would Tara MacLean be folk? Sarah McLachlan? I'm asking this cuz I'm considering auditioning at this audition/coffeehouse thing that's assosiated w/ our folk festival but I don't know if what I plan to sing would be ok...I plan to sing (if I do actually go thru w/ this) a song I wrote, which *shrug* I suppose could be folk (although I don't even know what folk IS) and Tara's "Silence" a cappella (which I might actually not decide to do cuz she does it so beautifully I'd be afraid to ruin it...) I thought Silence would be good cuz I wouldn't have to worry bout accomp...but this is all considering I actually try out...I have to call to find out more info anyway--if there are rehearsals, how many songs do you have to sing...rumour is 2....etc...so we'll see but in the meantime, anyone got any answers?? Appreciative thanx :) luv Shawna =) (who's dealing w/ exams and other "issues" and is making extreme use of the word "actually") ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------------------------------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans - -or-- unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans-digest ------------------------------ End of lilith-fair-fans-digest V1 #15 *************************************
