the woman behind us started calling on her cell phone, and offered to put us on next if she got through. finally, at 9:01, they get back, and the manager shows up too, but they still won't let us in, claiming it wasn't 9:00 yet. a minute or so later they let the first 5 people in, so we got inside, but the manager who was working the computer couldn't boot it correctly and lilith wasn't coming up. she had to call someone, and kept insisting that tix were *not* on sale yet. being a real bitch to us too. ok, it's only 9:05 now... the whole reserved area could have been sold out. she finally gets on, going as slow as she possibly can, puts in the tix for the people in front of us, and then when it gets to us, we ask if there are any pit seats available. she says no, and then puts in "best available". uh, ok, what crack was she on? she comes up with row DDD, pit, which is the 4th row from the stage (there are 4 rows in the pit). what amazing luck! we also then requested 3 more tix for friends, and got center section, row X. btw, the woman in front of us who was the *first* person in line got center, row W. that was for saturday. i think sat was a little more popular than sunday and so it sold quicker. i'm also going saturday, but with lawn seats (and lawn seats at camden the night before). 3 days of lilith in a row!!! so who else is going to the columbia shows? did anyone go through an ordeal as harrowing as ours? seriously, i think the guy was going to the bank just to spite us. and there was *nothing* we could do! - -dana - -- Dana Wagner University of Pennsylvania, Class of 2000 http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~dwagner it's crowded and i feel lost in here i'm trying to find a familiar fear i look everywhere but i just can't see there's not anything that reminds me of me -- chantal kreviazuk *under these rocks and stones* - -------------------------------------------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans - -or-- unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans-digest ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 May 1998 07:53:53 -0400 From: sean crabtree Subject: [lilith-fair-fans] polaris show if anyone is going to the polaris show and would like to meet before or after or during please let me know! my boyfriend and i are coming from maryland and will be staying a couple days because we don't want to travel on the forth! i'm 21 and he's 24, we will probably go to some bars and such and we were also wonder where the fireworks are on the 4th????? Magazine article with Sarah (from July '97) From: http://www.livemag.com/0797/sarah/ <<"I love girlie energy," says Sarah McLachlan, who has certainly surrounded herself with a lot of it this summer: As the creator, organizer and driving force behind the Lilith Fair tour, she's harnessed enough of that energy to fill some three dozen theaters in July and August. "I love celebrating girls." Lilith Fair's traveling celebration includes female musicians ranging from Mary Chapin Carpenter, Sheryl Crow and Joan Osborne to Jewel, the Indigo Girls, Fiona Apple, the Cardigans, Tracy Chapman and Suzanne Vega. But the head of this musical estrogen crew is a 29-year-old Canadian who only three years ago was told she was making a big mistake by hiring Paula Cole as her opening act. "A lot of promoters were just shaking their heads going, 'You know, you're crazy to put two women on the same bill,' " says McLachlan with a laugh. "They were sure there were going to be catfights backstage or something." But she and Cole got through that tour without baring their claws, and last summer she took it a step further by doing four all-female shows that included Cole, Vega, Patti Smith, Emmylou Harris, Aimee Mann and others. "It was really fun to be a part of something that had that kind of great energy," she says, "and also to have people I love and respect actually go, 'Yeah, I'd love to play.' It was a very cool feeling. And when I thought about doing a whole tour like that, I remembered what the promoters had said about me touring with Paula. And that added fuel to the fire." But then, over the course of three full-fledged albums in less than 10 years, McLachlan has always demonstrated an eagerness to venture into risky areas. Talk to her for long and you'll hear about the scars left by a troubled childhood, about a string of bad relationships, about damaging patterns she's spent years trying to break; listen to introspective, eloquently dark albums like Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and you'll discover what the healing process sounds like. Rock music, McLachlan says, saved her life when she was a 16-year-old in Halifax, Nova Scotia, skilled on the classical guitar and piano but lacking the competitive fire needed for a life of recitals and contests. She abandoned her classical studies after hearing Peter Gabriel's album Security--and by the time she was 17, she had a record deal with the independent Nettwerk label. Her first two albums sold steadily, and her reputation grew, especially in Canada. But the watershed was her third album, 1994's harrowing but richly imaginative Fumbling, which sold 2 million copies in the United States alone. Since then, she's been biding her time with an album of demos and a collection of rarities and B sides. An album of new, original material is overdue, and she knows it. But McLachlan, never a prolific writer, was creatively stymied until recently. She started trying to write in January of 1996 but found, she says, "I desperately needed to reclaim myself. I had lost a lot of my center when I was on the road for two years, and I needed to replenish the well, to have a normal life again. And so I spent the next six or seven months cooking my own breakfast and trying to get back to a state of normalcy." Therapy, she says, helped tremendously; so did a relationship with her drummer, Ashwin Sood, whom she married in February of this year. "I'm in domestic bliss, big time," she says. "I love gardening and baking. My mother laughs at me, 'cause she's been a homemaker for 40 years. She says, 'You only like it because you don't have to do it.' And she might have a point." McLachlan still feels the pressure of following the commercial and artistic success of Fumbling ("I'd like to lie and say I don't feel any pressure, but it's something I have to work on almost every day"), yet she's comfortable with her songwriting again and has a new outlook toward her music. "I always tried to put hope in my songs because I didn't want to sound too depressing," she says. "And I finally realized, that's bull. If you feel depressed, just feel it. And so some of the songs are really depressing. The ugly times are when you learn, and it's not always easy to get out of them." McLachlan is taking those songs on the road this summer and on a fall tour of her own, after Lilith Fair. But that doesn't mean fans should expect a dark, morose show. McLachlan's in an exultant mood these days--excited to play alongside women she admires, eager to watch the other artists' sets, thrilled to be part of a groundbreaking festival and glad to have created one of the most talked-about and, perhaps, controversial tours of the summer. "Anytime you put on something like this that's setting a precedent, it's gonna get dissed on some levels and put on a pedestal on other levels," she says. "But to me, it's just a festival of good vibes." When pressed, though, she'll admit there's more to it than just basking in girlie energy. Asked about the image she's chosen for the tour's title--Lilith, in some mythologies, was Adam's first wife, the woman he left for the more compliant Eve--she at first disavows any strong political intentions. "I wasn't trying to make a big feminist statement," she says. "I just sort of took the story as--" Then she stops. "Well, yeah, it is quite reactionary," she admits. "There's a part of me that enjoys that element of it, that's for sure. But then I go and say, 'Oh, I'm naive, I just wanted to put a girlie show together.' " She breaks out laughing. "Yeah, right. I know it doesn't work that way. "But at the same time," McLachlan adds, "I just wanted to do it, and I thought it would be fun. And then people started saying, 'Well, you realize that this is a big step for women.' And I say, 'Well, gosh, I guess it is.'
