My sister called to get tickets for the August 11th and 12th shows in Mansfield, MA. We wanted good seats for the first of those dates, and the best she could get were: Section 2 row P seat 47 (14th row) Section 3 row E seat 3 (front row off to the side) As you can see, these aren't even together, but we figured we'd rather be close and separate then just in lawn seats. Smoe.org is a volunteer server that hosts a great many lists for lilith-related acts, without charge. The below message is approved by the listowner(me) and smoe.org's owner as a fundraiser to support upgrade of smoe's equipment. Please, absolutely *NO* flames, complaints, etc. regarding the below message.] Hey folks :-) Did I say autographed by Jewel door prizes? Yeah.....I did, I'll get to that later. In the mean time, consider yourself cyper-tied to your chair and being forced to read this speil :-) Well, it's been nearly four weeks since I bugged ya about donating to the fund raiser to replace the existing hardware that houses smoe.org with new stuff. For those of you who are new to this particular list and likely don't know me, or didn't read my previous email on this fund raiser, the gist of my first post follows below this second pitch of mine :-) I'll give ya a full report on what we've collected so far. While the amount may sound impressive at first thought, it's really not. Especially when I throw all the figures at you. So far, we've raised nearly half of my/our immediate goal of $3,000 (although I'd be ecstatic at $4,000). We've gotten $1,470.68 However, that total has been contributed by only 67 people, and over half ($865) of it has been contributed by 11 people who gave 40, 50, 100 or 125 dollars. That means the other 56 people have totaled $605, which isn't bad at all for 56 people :-) It's the 67 total donors that is below our expectations, especially when you consider that there are over 9,600 subscriptions to the 44 (yes! 44!) mailing lists hosted at smoe.org, which represents about 7500 separate email addresses/people. I think we can do better than 67 out of 7,500+. I know we can :-) So please, send what you can, whether it be 5, 10 or more....I want to reach that goal of at least $3,000 and would LOVE to see us get $4,000. Remember, Jeff Wasilko, the generous dude that provides these lists free of charge, bought the now 7 year old equipment with his own moola, not to mention he pays the $150+ monthly operating costs (a dedicated ISDN line). The least we can do is pay a major chunk of the cost of the new Sun Sparc station(s) he plans on replacing the present smoe with, before it dies and this all ends for a while. **************************************************************************** ***** DOOR PRIZES DOOR PRIZES DOOR PRIZES DOOR PRIZES **************************************************************************** ***** While it's not many, I did manage to acquire 7 autographed Jewel items, plus a couple of dozen trinkets for door prizes. They will all be *randomly* awarded to people who donate to this cause, no matter what list you belong to. The seven autographed items are (each individualy awarded): a) Two twenty-page, full of pictures, full color Jewel lyric books autographed in gold ink on the front cover. These are the same books that were being sold at last summers' Lilith Fair and Jewel's 1998 Fall Tour. b) Two sets of five 5x7 semi-glossy color photo packs, with the first picture autographed in gold ink. c) Two of Jewel's ten times platinum CD Pieces Of You, with the insert autographed in gold ink. d) This is the top prize, especially to the collectors out there! A brand spanking new autographed in gold ink, RARE promotional CD, commonly known as "Phyllis Barnaby Finally Gets A Bra". It's a 4 track "You Were Meant For Me" promo CD that is pretty much impossible to find now a days. In fact, I myself consider it harder to find than her other promo CD "Save The Linoleum". The 4 tracks are an unreleased version of You Were Meant For Me (known as the Juan Patino version), and three other unreleased tracks Cold Song, Rocker Girl and Emily (although all three have subsequently been released on the vinyl version of Pieces Of You) Again, all seven (plus the trinkets.....Jewel guitar key chains and Jewel guitar pins), will be randomly given away to people who have already donated or donate in the future :-) See below on where/how to donate to help get a new smoe.org and keep these lists running & problem free for a long time to come :-) Thanx, Mike Connell (still ringing that bell) THE GIST OF MY FIRST POST (what the he** is a gist anyway? ;-): Posted in early April: Some of you may know me, most don't I'm sure. My name is Mike Connell and I manage the Jewel and Patty Griffin mailing lists at smoe.org. I'm writing you today is to ask for your help in a fund raiser to help keep smoe.org up and running for many more years to come. A gentle bloke by the name of Jeff Wasilko owns smoe.org and has always paid the monthly operating costs (NOT a small penny) and of course had paid for the expensive equipment it presently runs on. He has always offered this service for free since day one....no user fees....no list owner fees...totally free :-) Many rising artists and their fans have benefited from this service, as smoe.org hosts lists for such artists as Happy Rhodes, Paula Cole, Jewel, Patty Griffin, Tori Amos, Thomas Dolby, Poe, Susan Werner, Leah Andreone, Luscious Jackson, Ben Folds Five, the Indigo Girls, Shawn Colvin and many, many more. Some of these once unknown artists, and more to come I'm sure, had their internet presence begin right here at smoe.org :-) For a complete list of which artists have mailing lists hosted at smoe.org, you can go to http://www.smoe.org/lists Jeff is looking into replacing the hardware smoe.org operates on with more modern equipment, as the present units are a pair of seven year old SUN Sparc stations. This is necessary to get newer and better equipment in place before the present system falls down and goes boom permanently, leaving the lists at smoe.org temporarily without a home :-) This would be bad....very bad. This replacement is going to cost a pretty penny. On other list servers this would be no problem, as money would be used from the user fees. However since such fees don't exist here at smoe.org, we are asking for your help in the form of donations. We are not asking for major dollars here, just whatever you can give, whether it be $2, $5, $10, more ....whatever. You can send a check, a money order, or if a buck or two or three if you wish to send cash. If you can't afford anything, don't sweat it, this is NOT mandatory to stay on your list. We are just asking for you to help out if you can. Money orders are a piece of cake. (At least in the USA) They don't have a large fee at all, generally less than a buck, sometimes as low as 35 cents....although money orders from banks usually carry a larger fee (go figure ;-) Your best bet for a money order (in the USA) would be from the US Post Office....all money orders there have an 85 cent fee no matter what the dollar amount of the money order is. *** All checks or money orders should be made out to Jeff Wasilko :-) PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THEM OUT TO ME (Mike Connell) :-) ********************** HOW TO DONATE: ********************** Simple :-) Just send what you want (no Monopoly money please) to me at Mike Connell PO Box 1206 Binghamton NY 13902-1206 and I'll tally up all the figures etc and send it all on to Jeff :-) Remember, please make out all checks or money orders to Jeff Wasilko !!! :-) Please don't make them out to me :-) In your envelope, please include a note that contains your full name, the list(s) you belong to, and your email address you use here at smoe.org (I need to contact you if you win a door prize, and this acknowleges that I received your donation, as I contact you when I get your donation) Please help in this mission to give smoe.org a new home :-) If you have any questions, please feel free to write me and ask. We almost we out of luck. Living in Fresno, we mostly have Bass Tickets, who I called earlier in the week to confirm that they would have tickets for the Rose Bowl. So we stroll on in early to our local Tower records, and they told us they don't sell any SoCal events. So without a credit card, we were heading home without a chance for tix. Thankfully I remembered that RiteAid was now the exclusive Tickemaster centers for Northern California, so we stopped at one nearby. However, they did not have it up, and noone knew how to work it. We got really lucky, because the person that helped us was so nice, and persistent. He spent the whole half-hour before tickets were to go on sale, calling around all the local Rite Aids for help...he learned that his store was the only one that was even close to being up and running. So he called Ticketmaster...no answer...but just when we gave up hope..he called again with five minutes before on-sale time..and he reached someone who talked him through the system..and a ten o'clock on the dot he was up and running and we got seats in section A-5, row 12, seats 14 & 15. And to top things off he forgot to charge us the ticketmaster service charge. fumblin' closer toward Lilith 98, Chris Brown - -------------------------------------------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans - -or-- unsubscribe lilith-fair-digest ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 May 1998 12:32:37 -0500 From: Jamie Harding Subject: [lilith-fair-fans] frustration! I found this "Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women In Music" CD review from Allstar. It's a really unfair review by a guy who doesn't know what he's talking about and doesn't care.... - ------------------------------------- Review by: Allstar April 1998 by John Bitzer Various Artists - Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music (Tyde/Arista) The I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar ethos behind Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair concept would resonate with a bit more oomph if indeed a few of these women would roar -- and not just sonically. The grand irony of last year's inaugural Lilith tour was that it was peopled mostly by women who fit snugly into the traditional performance roles already accepted as normal and unthreatening by both sexes. In other words, if the idea was to support the power and versatility of the Female Artist, you'd think the tour would have included such innovators as PJ Harvey, Diamanda Galas, Me'Shell NdegeOcello, and Luscious Jackson (who knows, maybe they were asked, and it should be noted that the latter pair will appear on the '98 trek). But okay, you gotta start somewhere. Unfortunately, that somewhere is mired in the blandness of too many artists suffering from the girl- with- guitar syndrome, who write soft sensitive acoustic songs with tired clichi fluffiness (included in this double- disc collection are Lisa Loeb's "Falling in Love," Susanna Hoffs' "Eternal Flame," and Shawn Colvin's "Trouble"). Then again, troop leader McLachlan dictates that trend by emphasizing that side of herself -- and the inclusion here of "Building a Mystery" only reinforces her irony, which is that she has succeeded mostly in tearing down her own mysterious image, formerly an elegant source of her appeal. The only artist who delivers a memorable performance taking the acoustic approach is Emmylou Harris, whose "Going Back to Harlan" illustrates the sad fate of too many women trapped in untenable, unhappy domestic relationships. Aside from that, the strongest tracks here are the ones which take most advantage of the live setting and go electric, dammit: Joan Osborne contributes a fiery version of "Ladder" that parcels its energy with impressive control; and the album's strongest track hails from a most unlikely source -- Patty Griffin, whose "Cain" burns with venom and spontaneity. (Side note: the smart sequencing mirrors the ebbs and flows of a concert's momentum -- Griffin's romp is sandwiched between similarly uptempo tracks by Meredith Brooks and Wild Strawberries on the second disc, which eventually fades out delicately with Victoria Williams' flowing "Periwinkle Sky.") But this is mostly just a predictable souvenir. Let's hope that next time we're treated to a fresh dose of originality. - -John Bitzer _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. In addition, in MY own opinion, the review was not only NOT unfair, but I felt that this guy DID know what he was talking about and made some very reasonable points and observations. He wrote: " The I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar ethos behind Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair concept would resonate with a bit more oomph if indeed a few of these women would roar -- and not just sonically. The grand irony of last year's inaugural Lilith tour was that it was peopled mostly by women who fit snugly into the traditional performance roles already accepted as normal and unthreatening by both sexes. In other words, if the idea was to support the power and versatility of the Female Artist, you'd think the tour would have included such innovators as PJ Harvey, Diamanda Galas, Me'Shell NdegeOcello, and Luscious Jackson (who knows, maybe they were asked, and it should be noted that the latter pair will appear on the '98 trek)." What he is saying is that he thinks that since the idea behind Sarah's concept was to support the "power and versitality of the Female Artist," there should have been artists that don't come across as non-threatening to men, who don't fit into the role of Fenale Artist that has been accepted all these years. He thinks that hey should really stand out as doing something a bit different and empower the role of Female Artist that this tour was designed to do supposedly. Yes, it is making the news and giving women in music a newfound voice, but they aren't really the innovators of the scene and while they may be good --better than the rest-- they aren't the most fitting for Sarah's concept. I do believe tat that is what he was trying to say. I happen ot agree with a lot of this and thought that not only were his opinions fair, but they showed that he DOES know what he is talking about and does seem to care. Just my opinion. Sharon hopefully this one will make you smile! although some parts are kinda "put down" i think it's a more positive non-biased type of review! found it at mtv and thought i'd post it in light of what happened earlier. i think that it still gets the same point across that allstar was aiming for but it also gives the album itself a nice well put review, but that's only my opinion! ; ) Leslee Various Artists Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women In Music (Arista) Earnest. Heartfelt. Granola. Long flowing dresses, hairy legs, and muffins in a San Francisco cafe. Yes, all of these images come to mind at various times while listening to this album. But despite the obvious earth mother implications of the goddess festival called Lilith, there is some great music on this album. In fact, most of the performances on Lilith Fair: A Celebration Of Women In Music manage to deftly transcend the ghetto of "women and music." Abra Moore's "Four Leaf Clover" mixes female folk and kick-ass rock. Sarah McLachlan appears twice on the album, (well it WAS her idea) and each time she is brilliant. First, she takes her lush "Building a Mystery" and turns up the heat just a notch or two. Then later, she sings a cute little femmy version of "Water is Wide" with the Indigo Girls and Jewel. It's kinda cool to hear the crowd go wild when each new "woman in music" comes out to play. Now, this is a live album, but don't let that fool you -- somebody had some studio time for tweaking. These days, a live album means something closer to a new vocal and some audience noise, but that's actually preferable. Everything on here is as listenable if not more so than the original recordings. It's like a big ol' mix tape of chicks. Yeah, Lisa Loeb sucks, but that was true before Lilith Fair, and years from now listeners of the future will ask, "Who is Meredith Brooks and why was she let on stage with all these really talented people?" Much in the same way kids today look at the performers on the Woodstock album and scratch their heads wondering why Sha Na Na played. - -- Jay Blumenfield - -------------------------------------------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe lilith-fair-fans - -or-- unsubscribe lilith-fair-digest ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 May 1998 22:01:33 -0400 From: honeybee81@juno.com (Sharon D Moeller) Subject: Re: [lilith-fair-fans] better (in my opinion!)
