For several years I have promoted house gigs in Conker Cabin (by day my office). Robin and Dave played a cracker several years ago. Recently, I started making some short videos of songs and songwriters who have played Conker Cabin, two of my own, one that I produced, a live performance from my old friend and co writer of 'Thinking Out Loud', Amy Wadge, and her song writing partner, Pete Riley. We decided to use the videos to draw attention to some good causes that were close to the hearts of those taking part. Anyway, if anyone fancies a peek: They are: 1 Neat n Nige 'Live All Of Your Days' (a cheery number about good advice from old friends and supporting Bedford Open Door, a counselling service for young people): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afFB30iT4Ww 2 Amy Wadge & Pete Riley 'Better Then Me' (about a relationship and supporting research into Parkinsons Disease): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAphucT4z5A 3 Nige n Neat 'Lay Me Old Dog Down' (dog lovers have the hankies close by, as this is the Conker Cabin Sessions Weepie, supporting Blue Cross Pet Bereavement Service): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VKggdubm1I Two other videos also under the Conker Cabin Sessions Channel are: 4 My song about the refugee issue, 'Whatever You Do Don't Wash Up In Front Of Me' (which has been a little controversial and made me feel all political once again): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlBjbKAeOkI 5 The initial video of my new band, the Favourite Aunties in Conker Cabin in February 2015: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv7SGJdMSHs I know folk don't have time to look at all this stuff, but I thought I'd regret not letting my Joni mates know what I have been up to. I am currently working on a video by the wonderful young singer songwriter and performer at Conker Cabin, Luke Jackson. A good day to hunker down with a CD's worth of Joni covers, and here they come - HOT and FRESH for you just like a dozen Krispy Kremes. Rachel Z and her Trio really get things started right with a swinging instrumental of Help Me from her 2002 Joni Tribute album. You gotta love Suzy Thompson's Appalachian cover of River, unlike any of the others I've ever heard. Frank Lacy put out an album this year with the Mingus Big Band, and does not 1, not 2, not 3, but ALL four of the Mingus-Mitchell songs, the band sounds sensational but Lacy's vocals don't always hit the mark for me. THE highlight for me has to be Nicholas Rodriguez' cover of "Conversation". I saw him perform it at New York's 54 Below and besides having a magnificent voice he gives the song a new spin by singing about his lover who is trapped in a relationship with a woman. Thanks to Paul for these 2 Rodriguez tracks. Also notable, country singer Mindy McCready recorded BSN but never released it, so here it is posthumously. https://www.yousendit.com/download/bXBiYUl0R0ZtMEpqQTlVag 1. Rachel Z Trio - Help Me 2. Suzy Thompson - River 3. Mindy McCready - Both Sides Now 4. Lara Puglia - I Had A King 5. Georgette Fry b A Case Of You 6. Ku-Umba Frank Lacy - A Chair In The Sky 7. Ku-Umba Frank Lacy - Goodbye Porkpie Hat 8. Ku-Umba Frank Lacy - Sweet Sucker Dance 9. Ku-Umba Frank Lacy - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines 10. David Morgan - Spanish Fandango Medley 11. Kate Connaghan - River 12. Tracy Wundrock - Blue 13. Nicholas Rodriguez - Conversation 14. Nicholas Rodriguez - A Case Of You 15. The Humber College Vocal Jazz Combo - Both Sides Now 16. The Sole Pursuit - River 16 tracks, 16 hits - enjoy. Long story short, it would have to be the weekend of Sept 16-18. This resort is quite the paradise and therefore a bit more expensive. Nightly lodging rates would range from about $169 for a solo private room, all the way down to about $25 for a shared tent (these are permanent, floored, heated tents. Nice!). The more 'buddying-up', the less the nightly cost. There might be a minimal shared extra cost for jam space, etc, as well. > On 2 Oct 2015, at 19:36, c Karma wrote: > > With a year's notice, I am definitely interested in attending a JoniFest at > Ruby Lake Resort. There are a variety of things going on. Our camera person Nigel B is quite a wizard, syncing lots of bits and bobs which enable him to capture live takes and allowing me the facility to overdub, too. He used several bits of kit and mics that enabled me to add some bvs and a guitar after filming on 'Live All Of Your Days'. We used a pre recorded backing track for 'Lay Me Old Dog Down' Amy and Pete were recorded on my little Roland Edirol and synced to the video, whilst the Favourite Aunties and 'Whatever You Do Don't Wash Up in Front of Me' were just the camera mics. It makes me think a little bit of Kris Kristofferson's famous words to Joni when Blue came out, about saving something for herself. Can't remember the exact words, but Joni described herself as paper thin at that time. Almost like I want to say to you, Ingrid, save something of yourself for you. On the other hand, you give a real insight into what it's like to be you and to live with these psychotic episodes. I was shocked to read your story and I felt for you and I also feel for Joni. It must be so hard for her to deal with the profound feeling and even madness that the depth of her music has the power to evoke. Scary all round. I am so glad you are now able to see that Joni isn't your Mother. It brings tears to my eyes to read of you trying to be the 'best person' you can to try and go to Canada and I hope you will play STAS even if you don't go. It's a wonderful song to sing. I also hope you can stay in this place of insight into what happens in you. Whilst you have this insight, maybe you might not have to follow your 'outlandish thoughts' and feel so compelled to run with them? I don't know. Just trying to be helpful, but maybe you can take charge? I imagine some of these thoughts are very alluring but they sure as hell land you in deep, expensive s**t Anyway, I am very glad you're doing so well, Ingrid, and hope you manage to stay well.
