I don't know if I will ever be able to listen to another Beach Boys song without reimagining the torture that poor creative genius suffered at the hands of his father, psychiatrist or band mates for that matter. While it was not the feel good, date night kind of movie my husband was hoping for, it did get me thinking about those who struggle to keep mental balance, Charleston, Dylann Roof, Confederate Flags, etc. and I can only say that after reading Dylann's admission that he almost didn't kill these nine individuals because they were being "kind" to him - I have to truly to wonder if SC or the Confederate flag are to blame here? While I respect Lori's stance on this, this was a young man clearly depraved of love and kindness. Couple that with potential underlying mental illness and I think it points to the fact that we need to address the issues of loneliness and isolationism that force certain individuals to live inside their own heads when there may not always be a friend residing there. In searching for acceptance they become vulnerable to extremes of many kinds -- religious, political, racism, and otherwise. And members of society, because we are ALL searching for balance in a very unsteady world, are avoiding individuals who do not pass the litmus test for stability. We need to stabilize our own anger over these events and use it to make the world a more accepting, kind place for everyone. We need to make mental health care affordable and accessible to all, and not pass judgement against those who struggle. Because as this movie tonight showed us again, not all those who suffer from mental illness acquired it from a biological source. Hatred, and self-hatred is a learned thing - often taught to us by the very people who are supposed to love us. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2015 #162 ***************************** ------- To post messages to the list, sendto joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
