He's a uniquely American and beloved artist, audibly iconic. While his work doesn't have the social context and importance of say Pete Seeger's it's been quite valid in defining the "standards" of the post (Vietnam) war era. I don't think that we have to be slavish to Joni's personal definition of her own motivations as an artist. Change is not a requisite item.
