I am just listening to Laurie's BSN which I am certain HAS been covered a 
few times and her version is cracking!>

Oh yeah...if by "a few" you mean ALMOST 1,000. It's VERY tough for someone 
to bring something new to the franchise, particularly for me BUT when the 
song is done WELL it just drives home what a perfect song it is in terms 
of melody and lyric. Some singers (like Laurie) can make those words sound 
as fresh as they did in 1968.

I'll add (because I'm not sure that anyone has mentioned it) that Laurie 
also PRODUCED this record and the blending of sound and musical color is 
outstanding.
