I am with Michael on both Barangrill and Eastern Rain. Barangrill seems to lend itself so well to Laurie and her musician's arrangement. The flutes and clarinets with her scatting at the end is just so good and the messing around and additions to Joni's original riff work really well. I will go as far as saying I like Laurie's Barangrill BETTER than Joni's original. Laurie's eggs over easy are a particular triumph! What I particularly liked about 'Eastern Rain' was the vocal mix at the beginning - very warm against the (reverbed hand?) drums and there are some great touches. The 7/8 (I think it is) rhythm with some stylish eastern vocal flourishes bring something so fresh to the song. Brilliant. There is so much to enjoy here - I wasn't quite so taken, as you were Paz, with WOHM, but CBS&SF is chilling. Lauries timing on the chorus.... 'Come with me' and 'Down the Dark Ladder' fairly froze me. I remember a similar experience watching Susan Guzzi singing CBS&SF at Joni Fest in 2003, when I felt on a similar knife edge. I also really like 'This Flight Tonight' - what a great groove! Neat drums, heavy piano and in Laurie launches and when the chorus comes in that she shouldn't have got on this flight 'TONIGHHHHHHHt'. I loved it. Even the much covered 'California' is given a super swing. 'Californ YA' . I bought it that Laurie was coming home. I have never been a great jazz afficiando, but I had a jazz loving friend who, if he liked something he would say 'Man, that is fat!' Well, I would say that Laurie Antoniol's 'Songs of Shadow, Songs of Light' is very, very, very fat. Anita On 29 July 2014 18:30, Susan E. McNamara wrote: > I ordered my disc yesterday.
