This is one of the better Mitchell projects and I highly recommend it. David Gizara Thursday Night Jazz on facebook. In every respect it is a superb album and goes to prove how enduring and malleable Jonis compositions are. Laurie herself has dwelled in them all her life, as have many of us, and so the connection to the music is deep. Her band, which includes my old bassist colleague John Shifflett, is absolutely first class and the recording, made at Fantasy in Berkley, is superlative in itself. Great arrangers find inherent themes and melodic lines in a song, which are not necessarily the songs main melody, and weave new fabric from them. Lauries band members do just this, and so it is not the typical jazz format of stating the melody and then sharply veering off into jazz solo land; the improvising is not over extended and its integration with the compositions is excellent, a difficult balance to achieve. Congratulations to Laurie and her band (wassup John?) on a great record. I encourage listers to order a copy. cheers Dave ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Jul 2014 09:32:10 -0700 From: Bob Muller Subject: Retro Covers, Volume 111 All this talk about covers now, must be the start of the latest style! Well, a boy can dream. Hey all, here's an outstanding collection...talk about DEEEP tracks, it kicks off with three tunes that are rarely done, including one that Joni never released. Melody Diachun's "Free Man In Paris" is incredible. Maureen McGovern is famous for her monster hit "The Morning After", I think that was from The Poseidon Adventure. Sharon Veer used to be Sharon Bell aka Sharon with the family and farm in Song For Sharon. A couple of Fiddles and a Jericho, lots of uncommon delights in this sampler. https://www.yousendit.com/download/ZUczV0o2UEMwVW12eE1UQw 1. Jordan Trotter - Car On A Hill 2. "BYT" doesn't fit that description at all. And I agree that "Yahoo Beauty" sounds like an oxymoron. Maybe there's some other song that none of us have heard of. ________________________________ From: Lori Renee Fye To: Cc: JMDL Sent: Saturday, July 19, 2014 4:37:34 PM Subject: Re: Joni lyrics in the most peculiar places > and WTF is a "power ballad?" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Ballads_(disambiguation) I was thinking maybe Yahoo Beauty (that's funny in itself) columnist Laura Sherman was referring to Janet Jackson's song, "Got 'til It's Gone," but that wasn't released until 1997. I'd like to know WTF Laura Sherman is on about.
