My partner Steph, who has always been very supportive of my passion for Joni's music, has started to have dreams about Joni and asks me every morning if there's any news. She is a very political animal and a great grower of flowers and vegetables. Even she is concerned and curious about Joni's well being as the weeks turn into a month. Whilst you were on your JMDL 'break', I shared a story about Steph and our visit to Ruby Lake in 2012 which was so 'her.' We were very blessed to share an evening with Joni at Ruby Lake in BC, organised by Joni's friends, the Cogrossi family. Having travelled all the way from the UK for the event we had a wonderful time. At the time of the supper, which was soon after Joni had arrived, the assembled folk started moving up for the wonderful barbecue of organic, wild sockeye salmon and prawns with salad. A group of us from JMDL were invited to join the queue for food. Steph said to me bI must go and get my camera to photograph this beautiful fare.b She was gone for some time and then rushed over and excitedly said bYou must come now, you must come now. Ibm with Jonib It transpired that Giorgio Cogrossi had grabbed Steph by the hand and introduced her to Joni, who was at her table. It was later that Steph told me that, on being introduced, she said ' Joni, I am so pleased to meet you, but my friend likes you more than I do' Joni laughed , Steph said 'I didn't mean it quite like that, but can I go and get her?' and Joni said yes, of course. So Steph grabbed me and we went back and then I had my few moments to give my most heart felt thanks to Joni. An event that I still struggle to remember, but I get odd glimpses from time to time! Anyway, that's Steph. Wouldn't ever be a member of JMDL, but very concerned with all her heart and curious to know what's happened to Joni, too Anita ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Apr 2015 12:42:05 +0200 From: Marion Leffler Subject: Re: Latest report on Joni from Assoc Press Why does nobody seem to understand that my wondering was purely rhetorical? I am not in fact asking how Kilauren feels or anything else about Joni's private life. I was merely reacting to what we could read on facebook and other media. They must be doing OK because they used to do quite a bit of asking for donations and fund-raisers and now that's all but disappeared. They apparently have enough subscribers and donors that they can thrive without the reminders. I can tell you that they DO pay all of the requisite dues to BMI, ASCAP, etc. Several years ago there was some pending legislation regarding those fees that would have put them out of business overnight, according to them. The legislation was NOT enacted. Also, just FYI, unlike Pandora, Rhapsody and Spotify have random radio settings but you can totally program the to play just what you want, as long as you opt for the paying model (Spotify). I have 60-70 different playlists set up and typically that's what I listen to. Rhapsody's great but their radio genome is terrible, unlike Pandora's which is pretty darn good. And then there's TIDAL, Jay-Z's streaming service comprised of major artists (Beyonce, Madonna, Arcade Fire, lots more) trying to establish a business model that: a) offers a higher quality music stream (if you want it, $20/month vs. $10/month for their lower quality stream) b) offers exclusive product not available from other sources Barely a month old, this idea has already tanked. The CEO is gone and the app dropped out of Apple's top 750. Beats (Jimmy Iovine's model) also flopped and is in the process of retooling. I don't think the buying public saw an intense need to rethink the compensation plan for artists who are already millionaires if not billionaires.
