Like others here, I joined (or in my case, re-joined) the JMDL when I learned of Joni's recent hospitalization. At that moment, the list seemed the best place to be for some much-needed heart, humor, and humility. For those who don't know me, I was one of the list's old-timers from back in the mid-90's, but got caught up in life and technical difficulties a few years back. I've been an admirer of Joni's music since I first heard parts of "Court & Spark" at 15 in high school study hall, and feel privileged to have heard her in concert four times (one of which was that wonderful tour of 1979!). The JMDL was the first online list I ever joined, and I enjoyed meeting so many friends of spirit. For those who do know me, I'm sorry for the long absence. The big news is that I lost my job a few years back due to legislative changes that effectively repealed the state statute on which my legal career had been based. I went back to school and am now considering several new options, all of them pretty interesting! It's been great to see the old names, and to get to know the people behind the new ones. As someone from the old days used to sign off (Jamie Z., are you still here??): "Much Joni." Cool that you had run across Howard Gardner before and his article on intelligence mentions Joni! I have 220 Joni songs on my iPod and have been listening a lot lately. I appreciate folks who have posted some obscure videos with Joni. This page is cool, I don't remember if someone posted it here to the list, or I found it on Google. http://loft965.com/2015/04/03/loft-list-10-underrated-songs-by-joni-mitchell/ I had never seen her performance on the Jay Leno show, that was great! Its sad to see people leaving the list. I was thinking today how a Joni list softball team would do against David Crosby's lists team. I was guessing they would run out of breath sooner and we would cream them. You're exactly right, "it's like taking a trip into her soul and yours at the same time-- it's deep," as you so accurately put it. It continues to be a big undertaking but a complete honor every step of the way. Having Joni's music move through my body, voice and hands is a meditation I've never really experienced before. I sense you have had similar experiences. The shapes of the words and their story, the patterns of the guitar chords and all those tunings...you really have to surrender on so many levels. I'm working on an EP right now but hope to start a more complete recording in the fall. Someone asked about my creating a more individualized interpretation to the music going forward which of course I will. I've been frequently touring alone lately so recreate the music wherever I am with artists in those areas. The nature of these tours is giving way to some amazing reinterpretations, so I'm just watching that unfold. The Ireland tour will be all artists from that area and we hope to record that show and learn how this group will reinterpret the music. I anticipate the recording in the fall will be wildly different from the recordings on the site which are stylized close to the original recordings. When we realized how much people were yearning to hear the music we brought it out this way for them first. I've spent so much of my life as a jazz singer in obscurity, absorbed in music from another generation; "In clouds at icy altitudes," as it were. It's all been worth the journey, don't get me wrong. However, there is something about reigniting my own personal Joni roots at this point in my career that has really brought me full circle and the music touches so many people."And looking down on everything I crashed into his arms," probably says it pretty well. Regarding Joni's hospitalization; I agree with you on the space and privacy one needs when convalescing. I've just come through major surgery with my daughter and you just don't want to invite the world in until the dust settles and you're feeling ready for the energy. My daughter is doing fine now, but I could understand Joni's not wanting to included the world in her process. I teach a jazz history and music class to elementary school students. I'm now feeling we need to stretch the curriculum further forward to include Joni's work. This is how the music and the history of it lives or dies and it's an essential part of our cultural heritage. Congratulations to you on your upcoming shows! These all sound terrific. I'd love to be there!!! Thanks again for your generous note and support. Just checked out your website and you've put tremendous work, time, love and energy into honoring Joni. It's a massive undertaking and having just come out of that process myself, know that it's like taking a trip into her soul and yours at the same time-- it's deep. And inspiring and brave. Congratulations! I didn't see a recording to purchase - it that on the way? Are you still working the material live before releasing something? Let us know! I've been pretty quiet since Joni went into the hospital. I think of her daily especially with the big gala event I'll be singing at on May 8th. We don't know if she'll be there but SFJAZZ just sent out a newsletter and they are going forward. We can only hope this means there's a glimmer of a chance she'll somehow be able to attend. I respect whatever process she's going through right now and understand her need for privacy. Though perhaps not as dramatic as Joni's recent event, I went through 3 jaw surgeries over the last few years and wasn't sure if I could continue singing. I was "on ice" in the studio when I did "Songs of Shadow" and it is getting better, but, I didn't feel much like announcing to the world I may "never sing again' or perhaps even need to go on disability. All to say, health issues are very personal and until we get on the other side of them it's not something we necessarily want the world to know about. (I'm just sharing my personal views not presuming anything about Joni) and for me, there were quite a few people in my community that knew about the surgeries. It got tiresome talking about it - in other words, I got very tired of talking about "my health problems." I got tired of myself! Especially since talking actually made my jaw feel worse! I felt obligated to tell those who knew what was going on, but, if I didn't have to work and could "hide out" that would have been the preferred way to deal with the situation. I feel positive about Joni's recovery. And for sure we must continue to celebrate her no matter what. People will be even more interested in hearing your project since it's a way to keep the energy going. My next project, coming out in the fall, is not Joni's music and since it's originals and obscure music, fewer people will relate to the recording. With Joni's music, people know the songs and enjoy hearing them - whether they are "cover" renditions, or reimagined. It's timeless and essential to our culture and she is timeless and essential. I am teaching a lyric-writing class at the Conservatory and now in week 12 finally got around to Joni. I played some of her music for the students last week - I think at least one of them had never heard her before. That aside, listening in the classroom, as she compares to all the music I play for the students, she stands out like a jewel. There's really no one or nothing quite like her and her songs. She's so very important and of course that's what fuels this chat group and what keeps many of us tuned in. Go for it. Keep the flame burning. Carry the torch. All of that. It's exactly what needs to happen.
