I touched in with Les the other day not knowing exactly what to do. What had started out as a wonderful study and emersion into Joni's songs quickly turned into a painful vigil with the news of her illness. My response from Les and hopefully from you all too is that I should just "go for it," and press on with this powerful music and tribute. "Celebration of Joni Mitchell" is barely a year in the making and plays music from every decade. If any of you are in the areas where we're playing I hope that you stop in and say hi! Like others here, I joined (or in my case, re-joined) the JMDL when I learned of Joni's recent hospitalization. At that moment, the list seemed the best place to be for some much-needed heart, humor, and humility. For those who don't know me, I was one of the list's old-timers from back in the mid-90's, but got caught up in life and technical difficulties a few years back. I've been an admirer of Joni's music since I first heard parts of "Court & Spark" at 15 in high school study hall, and feel privileged to have heard her in concert four times (one of which was that wonderful tour of 1979!). The JMDL was the first online list I ever joined, and I enjoyed meeting so many friends of spirit. For those who do know me, I'm sorry for the long absence. The big news is that I lost my job a few years back due to legislative changes that effectively repealed the state statute on which my legal career had been based. I went back to school and am now considering several new options, all of them pretty interesting! It's been great to see the old names, and to get to know the people behind the new ones.
