As the whole song is about justification of her life choices /coming to terms with the realisation that she has lost the opportunity to have a life similar to Sharon,it is an either or metaphor in a song stuffed with direct comparisons between their lives. The diamond snake image makes me think of For the Roses. She says her career provides her with things she's not ready to give up, though she feels she suffers from the consequences of it. The riches in the diamonds and the clutching grasp of a snake on her arm like an ankle monitor of an at home prisoner. The apple of temptation is fairly straightforward I suppose. I always equate apple to knowledge and think of it positively but it's likely related to desire to know men in a sexual way. - - Shari > On Feb 13, 2014, at 12:47 AM, "johnnybgoode@lineone.net" wrote: > > All, > > I think that the protagonist(Joni)is saying that she has too many > romantic and sexual opportunities (apple of temptation)and I think > that the diamond snake is vanity (diamond -reference to diamond ring) > and snake is selfishness and unreliability. > As the whole song is about > justification of her life choices /coming to terms with the realisation > that she has lost the opportunity to have a life similar to Sharon,it > is an either or metaphor in a song stuffed with direct comparisons > between their lives. > > John > > >> ----Original Message---- >> From: > shari@sharieaton.com >> Date: 13/02/2014 04:44 >> To: "joni" > >> Subj: Song for Sharon question >> >> Just curious .. I'll send a link for DownLoading the 2-Disc Set "2nd Fret Sets" later today, or tomorrow. However, before I do, there is a radio program that will provide some background and perspective. It's the logical place to begin. Between 1966 and 1968 Joni made several trips to Philadelphia. There were appearances at the 2nd Fret, the Main Point as well as Gene Shay's "Folklore" radio program. Ed Sciaky recorded several of Joni's club appearances and also interviewed her backstage at The Fret. Joni's several appearances on "Folklore" were also recorded. Some of these recordings are included on the 2-Disc Set "2nd Fret Sets" - - - - - - At various times Ed or Gene would revisit Joni's Philadelphia appearances and play selections from their recordings. However, to the best of my knowledge, there was only one occasion when both Ed and Gene were together in the studio (WMMR-fm) with a careful, planned presentation. THAT's the recording I recently UpLoaded via Hightail. You can DownLoad your copy at the following URL: WMMR Radio Retrospective.zip It's a zip.archive that contains -2- pdf.files with complete information and -2- folders containing the Radio Program. THIS program includes several Interview segments, song introductions and other comments that are Not included on the 2-Disc Set "2nd Fret Sets". It's a large file, so be patient. It Will take a little while to DownLoad. A content list is included (below) with this message. However a pdf.copy is included with the zip.archive. - - - - - - This broadcast was recorded by a good friend in 1974. His copy is an open-reel tape recorded at 3 3/4 ips. The cassette copy I rec'd was recorded on a C-120 Maxell LN cassette w/o Dolby Noise Reduction. So, there IS a certain amount of Tape Hiss. However, this shouldn't detract from your enjoyment of the program. The verse starts with Joni rattling off what Sharon has that Joni perhaps craved at one point, but the devilish snake (the diamonds representing wealth possibly) and the apple (fruit of knowledge) are too strong a draw for her to accept the status quo for herself and doing what she's told, or what's expected of her by others. Before retiring a few years ago, Howie was president of Reprise Records and, of course, worked closely with Joni. He's a full time blogger now and decided to donate 4 prints Joni gave him for a contest to raise money for Rep. Alan Grayson from Orlando. Grayson isn't just enthralled with Joni's music, he knows every songs she's ever recorded. We think you'll like what he had to say about her: http://downwithtyranny.blogspot.com/2014/02/blue-america-nexus-of-where-alan. html CONTEST INFO: The basic rules are the same as our other contests: just contribute any amount to Alan Grayson and Lee Rogers on this special Joni Mitchell page (https://secure.actblue.com/contribute/page/joni?refcode=jmdl) or, if you're strapped for cash and want a chance to win, send us a post card telling us so at "Blue America, P.O. Box 27201, Los Angeles, CA 90027." We will pull four random winners from all entrants after about a week's time and announce the winner on our facebook page, twitter and our web page home: http://blueamerica.crooksandliars.com/blog What makes this contest different is that we're giving away 4 Joni Mitchell art prints (18" x 24") and Grayson suggested that we choose four random winners! Everyone has a lot better chance to win one of the rare, collectible Joni prints-- four times better! We'd really appreciate it if you would help us let other Joni fans know about this contest. Max Bennett showed us the medallion she designed and had fashioned, and gave as gifts to her L.A Express members. It was an elaborate two-sided design with iconography from the songs of The Hissing of Summer Lawns.
