I had that same Joan Baez album, which is where I first heard the song "Fountain of Sorrow." I'm guessing that Joan B just liked the song without knowing who it was about or even if it was about a particular person. I'm quite sure Jackson Browne didn't reveal who it was about for a long time. Sometimes you just like a song for what it says to you without knowing if it's based in actual history or just resonates with you somehow. If this song is about Joni, how come JB covered it? As I recall Joni and Joan are supposed to be anything but friends, according to this list. On the other hand, they did Dida together, very beautifully too. So I am left wondering... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Apr 2015 09:57:41 +0100 From: Anita Gabrielle Subject: Re: Emily Carr exhibit, Art Gallery of Ontario Catherine, when Steph and I had our most amazing trip to Canada's west coast back in 2011,we visited Victoria, which was my least favourite place, except for the Emily Carr museum and house. At that time, I wasn't aware of Emily Carr but her paintings, especially of the Haida Gwaii totem poles, were spectacular, and Steph and I talked about Joni's work and imagined that she might have some affinity with Emily. I remember most clearly photographs of Emily with her pet Black Crow, so we wondered if Joni might have done that, too and had quite a laugh! I wonder if the crow photos will be included in the exhibition in Toronto. When we were in the museum, Steph and I talked about the similarities between the independent spirits and love of the land of Emily and Joni, so when Joni recited her poem at the Luminato about Emily Carr, it felt to me another one of the fantastic coincidences that have surrounded my whole life and relationship to Joni's music and art. We girls from England had speculated on Emily and Joni as kindred spirits two years previously. I think you will really enjoy the exhibition. Seeing paintings 'live' you get the sense of scale. Pictures of of paintings are never the same and I really loved Emily's art. Just woken up to the news Kakki sent from Joni's granddaughter Daisy that Joni really could be recovering and then read this from Mary and I have had quite a weep. Alongside her music, we are so aware of Joni's life story. The thought of Joni at 71 getting the chance to sing once again to a Christmas tree..........well, it's really got me. Must go get another tissue. It is extraordinary how, each day this past week, so many of us have been pulling for, worrying about and feeling so helpless to support someone we have never met (or in my case met very briefly) yet have been so deeply affected by. Got a little bewildered reading the discussion/information on Fountain of sorrow. I guess you all are aware of the cover Joan Baez did on her album Diamonds and Rust. If this song is about Joni, how come JB covered it? As I recall Joni and Joan are supposed to be anything but friends, according to this list. On the other hand, they did Dida together, very beautifully too. So I am left wondering... As for Joni's illness I agree with those of us who are concerned but prepared to respect her privacy. If she wants the world to know what has happened she will do so eventually, if not there is nothing that can be done. She does not owe us anything. She has already given us her music. When I saw the ranking that the writer gave TI I was all "Uh-oh, Sue's not going to like that"...I also loved the "gateway drug" line in talking about HOSL, and it's sorta true. I'm sorry about your colleague. That kind of thing can be a real bummer.
