Bob NP: Death Cab For Cutie, "Ingenue" From: c Karma To: "joni@smoe.org" , Date: 03/31/2015 10:50 AM Subject: (NJC) Curing cancer with polio Sent by: owner-joni@smoe.org http://www.cbsnews.com/news/polio-cancer-treatment-duke-university-60-minutes - -scott-pelley/ This link will take you to a story broadcast this past weekend about researchers getting hopeful results with a novel and controversial treatment involving injecting tumors with a modified version of the polio virus which destroys the tumor but is inert against healthy cells. The FDA will soon announce whether there is evidence of a breakthrough of sorts, enabling Duke University to seek corporate partners to market the treatment. It begs the question whether any epidemiologists have studied the limited numbers of folks who survived the polio epidemic in the 1940s and 50s to see incidence of cancers (or, absence thereof). Like Joni, most of these folks would be in their 70s. How wonderful it would be to consider that persons who have suffered and survived such an ordeal might be saved from another by way of that experience.
