I've been listening to her recordings for so long that I have to occasionally give them a rest because I tend to listen without "hearing" them, if you know what I mean. I've never been much of a "covers" guy (sorry Bob) but lately that seems to be changing. Interesting thing... but hearing someone else do Joni - and do her well - reminds me again of what a genius she is. I think it casts different shadows and light (sorry) on her music and revives the excitement I felt when I first heard her. I'm thinking of Dave and Robin's Hejira concert and their really-needing-to-be-heard Mingus concert. Even though I missed the live Mingus event, I was lucky enough to hear a couple of tunes from it and was pretty much blown away. I hope Dave and Robin decide to release the entire concert in whatever form! Please? http://www.robinadler.com/products.html I'm thinking of Laurie Antonioli's recent CD that crowded out everything else from my iPod for about a month. Such originality and excitement on that disc, a similar feeling I don't think I'd felt since Joni herself released DJRD. http://www.laurieantonioli.com/shop/product/songs-of-shadow-songs-of-light/ And another one has recently popped on my radar - by Argentinian singer Florencia Otero. She sheepishly emailed me through Joni's site last week asking if I'd give her 2012 release a listen. Wow... is all I can say to this entire release as well. She allows you to listen to the whole thing online and to name your price if you want to download it. Check out her totally original takes on Dry Cleaner and Both Sides Now. http://florenciaotero.bandcamp.com/ I'm reminded of Joni's comment at one point when asked what her songs mean, she said "who cares what I meant, what does the song mean to you??" The above-mentioned artists epitomize that statement and are showing us exactly what it means to them. I feel honored to be in a community with so many amazingly talented artists. I urge you to support these artists (and all the others I forgot to mention) who are keeping Joni's work alive!
