The last of Bob's covers I had time to download had the Benton Elementary School choir doing Chelsea Morning. Very enjoyable. Hopefully some of those kids asked their parents to get them the Love Has Many Faces Box Set, though it dosen't seem very likely, especially since there are no demos and out takes on it.Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Mar 2015 14:57:46 -0500 From: Jimmy Stewart Subject: Re: R.I.P. I laughed out loud in several places and nearly spit my dinner on the computer monitor. Of course I've also been someone who has been disappointed in Joni's "best of" compilations since "Hits" and "Misses." I felt ripped off after buying those discs because there was ONE new tune. "Travelogue" is an exception to my disappointment because of the orchestral arrangements and Joni's matured voice, but the rest of the "themed" stuff? I appreciate Joni trying to set up themes or tell a story but I can't afford to buy boxed sets that are just reordered music that I've already owned in multiple formats for decades. Four new tunes on the Geffen set wasn't enough of an enticement for me to lay out the money required to purchase the set. When I was younger I hung on every word written by and about Joni but now I'm not going to pay $60 just to get a booklet and I hate ballet anyway so the latest boxed set isn't for me (despite my previous flirtation with buying it, I've come down firmly on the "no" side of that decision). A tote bag? I need another tote bag like I need an extra hole in my head. I love Joni Mitchell (that sounds strange since I've never met her in person but y'all know what I mean). Joni's body of musical work has provided the sound track to my life since I was 18 years old. I enjoy quite a few of her paintings. However, if Joni doesn't feel up to recording anything new -- and I completely understand and respect that -- then maybe it's time to rest on her laurels and let things be. Bob's video was hilarious. I'm not a hater of "Dancin' Clown" but the whole thing was well done and flat out funny to me. Your mileage may vary, but there was no harm done. If you don't like it then you don't. If you do and you got a good laugh then it served a purpose. As far as I'm concerned the video is the funniest thing I've seen online in a good long while and I appreciate it. I don't mix music or do the mp3 thing, so very happy to have her work rearranged in a new format for me......the orchestrations are very lush & JM's use of musical paint refreshing. McNamara" Subject: RE: Joni Mitchell releases a Box Set The analogy to the Dr. Seuss exhibition is a good one Bob. I believe Joni Mitchell is one of the most original and important composers of her era, and I believe her music will live on and be the stuff of much research and repeated performances. Knowing her full body of work, from her first songs, like Day After Day, to her more mature works (some still not even imagined by her) will be something people will enjoy studying, performing and listening to for a long, long time. Whether she decides to release these works in the near future is her business, but I wish she would (for my own selfish pleasure, I guess). As a big fan of his work, I found it fascinating. I'm sure he never imagined that anyone would see any value in it. Now they've unearthed some unpublished work of his (perhaps just some things that were refined and released) that will be published soon. Was exciting news to his hordes of fans. Just to be clear, I TOTALLY respect Joni wanting complete control of her work. At the same time I can't help but be fascinated by the Pandora's Box full of stuff that's out there. The video I think depicts some truths about her that make it funny because they are truths. It is the differences in how each of us feel about the music and most of all the humor that we share here as a group over the 20 years that I have been a part of it (can it be that long???). I was the first one that said that I would be damned if I was going to buy yet another version of songs that I have copies of in every other format and release.
