Jim,

I thought that particular sentence from the article was both incorrect
and poorly written.  I distinctly remember Joni stating somewhere years
ago that she had, in fact, told her parents about the baby five years
after the adoption.  I also remember the article (think from the
National Enquirer) that first revealed the details of her giving a baby
up for adoption.  Most people close to Joni, including her parents and
boyfriends, were long aware of it.  Somewhere else, Joni stated that
while she was at first surprised about the revelation in the tabloid,
she also came to think it might be a good thing to have it publicized in
the hopes of finding her daughter.  I'm sure all these past articles are
somewhere in the JM Library.

WTH is up with all of this bitterness?  Did she come all this way to end

like her hero, Friedrich Nietzsche, in despair and suicide?>>

It's interesting. I'm just finishing one of Toller Cranston's
autobiographies. Many of the sentiments are the same. There's a certain
bitterness, a sense of having missed something. He's always hoping to be
'discovered" by Hollywood. Geez, being a world reknowned skater and
artist isn't enough? 

I can't help but wonder at both Joni's and Toller's sense that nobody
understood them, that there was never enough adoration to feed them. Not
to say it was all bad for them. I guess it's just easier to talk about
the disappointments. 

When Toller talks about going to a party at Joni's, he makes a grand and
ridiculous entrance, dressed completely inappropriately. She's nowhere
to be found; hiding in her bedroom. He does get to talk to her
eventually, but feels like a fool. Again, he was hoping to be
'discovered.' I get the sense that there's a real pecking order to fame
and that those hungry for it can never get enough. 

Do you suppose either one was happy during the creative process?
