On a blog he said, >Posted by john curl (M) on April 21, 2003 at 14:36:20 - ------- For high power, I would use autoformer. They are efficient and relatively cheap. For preamps, CD, etc, I would use an isolation transformer. This will reduce RFI, if you get a proper isolation transformer.> I found that "autoformer" is another name for an auto transformer. I found many examples on eBay for about $80 or so plus shipping. (I found one at a garage sale long ago for $20 and snapped it up.) For the sources, I bought a medical isolation transformer with 6 hospital-grade (green dot) receptacles in a flat black metal case. I paid $65 plus shipping. The receptacles alone are worth that. After lots of looking I finally found shielded IEC power cords at Allied Electric's site. Both are way oversized: 14 AWG for the power amp & 16 AWG for sources. Much, much cheaper than audiophile cords. So how's the sound? In my rig: - - center vocals are more natural now. Not thrown forward any more - -no sibilants at all but snares sound right. You can hear reverb on stuck woodblocks now, as God intended. - - mo' betta bass - -much easier to hear that JT wasn't playing the solo on "Carry Me On My Way". Just sayin'. - - better dynamics. Things sounded pinched, thin, and bunched before. Currently the preamp is on the same transformer as the digital sources, and that is frowned on. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2014 #1665 ****************************** ------- To post messages to the list,sendtojoni@smoe.org.
