It is pretty amazing that Joni's albums sold so well in the 70's, despite not having hit singles (except for Help Me) and being very challenging music. They all went gold pretty quickly up to Mingus. Around here they play alot of classic rock and baby boomer music. James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Bob Seger, Neil Young, Eagles, Rondstadt, etc, but almost never Joni. So are these her peers? Not really, although in a way they are, up to a point. I like seeing her stuff being included in what is thought of as the Great American Songbook. Much of it belongs there. So are her peers Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Gershwin, etc? Kind of. I don't know if she'd like to be compared to Sondheim, though. Some reviewers have likened her songs to Schubert (art songs) the early songs and songs like Amelia. The poetry is often compared to Keats. Is she a rock star, a cabaret chanteuse, a little of both? She needs to get a Kennedy Center Honor. Its about to start now. Its nice that she got the TNT tribute and the Polar Bear Prize, but almost everyone watches the Kennedy Center Show and it would help put her in peoples consciousness. Maybe next year.
