Exactly my point a few days ago. That Rochester, New York accent is strong. They pronounce the woman's name Dawn exactly like Ohioans say "Don". My mother (may she rest in peace) ran afoul of this when a family friend introduced his girlfriend. The conversation went like this: Casey: >Mrs. L'Hommedieu, this is my friend, "Don". My mother: >What's her name? Casey: >"Don". My mother: >Oh, you poor girl! You have a boy's name! Casey:>Not Don. "Don". My mother: >Yes, I know, but Don is a boy's name. Casey: >Not Don! "Donnnn". Abbott and Costello couldn't have done it better! Jim L. Laura said in part, > But ask Marianne or anybody from Rochester, NY to say "said," and you'll hear "sad." Ask an Arkansan to say "said" and you'll hear "Sid." Ask somebody from the midwest like Kansas or Nebraska to say "said" and you'll hear "sed." It would be a good question to ask Joni.
