A discussion of a non-Joni topic should have the NJC (No Joni Content) in the subject line. In this case someone apparently forgot it and then people simply hit the reply button. You're happy that Kepler was >> denounced as a mystic. But the explanation goes on: the history of >> universities.....the wonders of progress and knowledge, the necessity to have >> work ethic and contribute ....time to go back and face the endless lectures >> amid the ambitious students, knuckling down, noses in their books....getting >> drunk at night....inconsistent value systems....akward social occasions, the >> pretentiousness that constitutes the communication between students, the >> laughter that lacks conviction because one knows real magic has been left >> behind. But through it all, the dedication to doing the work that will get >> you through. All the chaos gets resolved into a chosen career. Somehow >> ambitions have been formulated.....law, medicine, computer programmers.....the >> ends which makes eveything make sense.....the tedium of the alternative, >> working away at a job where a cigarette break may bring meaning to your life. >> The incomprehension of what a surgeon is actually doing with his >> intelligence...the procedures, the hospital environment, the ruthlessness all >> around. CEO's and their goals.....selling more potato chips, the distribution >> networks, the margins, the commodity cycles that get you down....the >> secretaries that hold all the chaos together. The disciplines with their >> conflicting approaches to the world leaving one feeling so confused... The >> sundays that leave the entire working world experiencing the blues.....the >> slow progress towards demise, the depressions that are avoided. The clever >> monetary system designed by the intelligent that absolve the intelligent from >> any work but gambling on futures or on others. The astronomers and the >> astrophysicists and the particle physicists that may think knowledge will lead >> to a final explanation. The herbalists and the playwrights and the zoologists >> and the chefs and finally, the sisters of mercy. >> A madman ditches all this...all the rational scientific explanations of his >> conception and his purpose that are as vacuous as the word gravity....the >> madman relishes the wonderful inexplicable action-at-a-distance because it >> confuses everyone else until they settle on the word gravity...but that is >> just an inner delight. The madman ditches all sentence structure if it means >> freedom from being assailed by explanation after explanation that merely >> serves to explain away everything. If the madman drinks coffee he is delighted >> and astonished that it was offered to him when he was just thinking about it. >> No amount of economic, historic, geographic, agricultural information will >> pursuade him that this taste of coffee isn't miraculous. Neither does he want >> to hear a word about it ...he is savoring his coffee and he knows that every >> single explanation merely describes the passage of time..The coffee may as >> well have been created just for him. In fact it came out of a bottle and water >> was added and such was the creation of it.... The madman won't be lamenting >> about who grows the coffee where and who works at it and who doesn't get paid >> enough, the madman just knows it as a gift and as he knows he certainly won't >> be working for it - he'd rather be idle , marvelling at the sun shining down >> on him, the stars that would rather not be named, in constellations of their >> own choice. The color of the flowers.....emanating from a brown >> earth....there will be no explanation that will take away his astonishment. >> Explanations stand between the profound, grand, simplicity of creation and the >> incredulous madman. They are neither here nor there. It is a bigger >> contribution to stand in absolute awe of creation,...to marvel at the words >> escaping from ones'mouth...everything striking one as revelatory.....his mad >> laughter that sometimes accompanies his perceptions about the paradoxical >> world being explained alarms those whose neural circuits can't handle it. He >> is too intense, his observations are too obviouss, things are being described >> in a way that is rendering everything too absurd. He has excess dopamine and >> he will be brought into line. If he has the imagination to think his enemies >> should contemplate posioning him he is paranoid. No matter, the psychiatrists >> will take over. The simplicity of his life, no career, no money, no clothes, >> no status, no choice is nothing compared to the gift of experiencing onesself >> and the universe first-hand......every explanation merely treads water with >> the process it is explaining...it will change with the fashions and the >> paradigms of the day......at every change which miraculusly accompanies the >> flow of time the madman will be overcome with astonishment . He might just as >> well start with the word, (coffee), and end with the taste of it in his mouth. >> Nothing can explain away ones' existence and nothing can explain away the >> universe.......so the madman is left coping with it, in his poverty..Sometimes >> he is grandiose and he thinks he is Joni Mitchells daughter. Sometimes he is >> coherent enough to communicate again. >> Anyway, I think that in Shine Joni Mitchell is alluding to the madmen's >> simplistic universe as being an attempt to bring some sanity back to the >> world, but that it mostly leaves one incoherent. So she says, I suppose in >> comfort but maybe also in hope, let your little lights shine..... ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2014 #1458 ****************************** ------- To post messages to the list,sendtojoni@smoe.org.
