He really liked Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'" and asked her and Nilsson and others to write a song for the film. Nilsson wrote "I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City", Joni wrote "Midnight Cowboy", I've read that Dylan contributed "Lay Lady Lay", not sure that that is true. Schlesinger ended up not using any of them in the film, but he did have Harry Nilsson sing the Fred Neil song and Harry had a hit with it. Joni's demo tape of the song ended up in the hands of folksinger Donal Leace who recorded it on his 1972 self-titled album, produced by Roberta Flack. I had some email correspondence with Mr. Leace long ago, he stated that he still had that demo tape. Sure would love to hear it! Midnight Cowboy is my #1 film of all time. It was Bob Murphy's as well. Bob NP: Lara Puglia, "All I Want" B From: Laura O.
