Strangely, in 2011 before I had ever heard of Emily Carr we were on Vancouver Island and we read about her whilst in Victoria (which was a place everyone seems to love, but I was underwhelmed by). I was especially intrigued that Emily painted on the Haida Gwai, so visited the museum and her house on the strength of that. What struck me most was the power of her paintings of totem poles on the islands and the fact that she had a pet black crow, which instantly made me think about Joni. Best thing about Victoria was undoubtedly Emily Carr. Looking at the track lists, I see threads here and there and then just when I think I'm developing something out of it, she throws in what seems to be a ringer. Of course, without the lighting, the dance and all of the visuals you can't really flesh out a concept. The visual aspect of 'The Fiddle and the Drum' was essential to the work. I love the music and I can see how she might feel the need to make something out of the long and difficult process of selection and sequencing. But I'd much rather be able to see the ballet that was the purpose of the whole selection and sequencing process than shell out close to sixty bucks for, as others have stated, a collection of songs that I could make myself from the CDs I already own.
