I'm actually leaning toward getting this collection. I like what I see of the packaging and like the idea of having all that remastered music in one place. Plus one of my favorite songs is Love Puts On a New Face. Also, I like what Jeff said about watching the evolution of a Joni song. I think a really great example in the record is the transformation of Love Cries into Crazy Cries of Love ... She must have changed the tune when she got into the studio to record Taming the Tiger ... There's a little bit of Night Ride Home at the beginning of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pc17QlRZEKc Her guitar craft is front and center here ... before VG8 ... I love the song Dancing Clown and especially love the video of it where Joni is dancing with her cat in the kitchen. Bring on the ballet! I ordered the set for 10 days after Joni's happy birthday. Its of the first draft of Barangrill sitting on her piano. If you've never seen it before its a cool photo. It looks like the working title is Lost Hill or something. I'd like to get it someday as the centerpiece of my Joni room. I enjoyed hearing Loves Cries on acoustic guitar. One of my favorite concerts of hers was the Gene Autrey Museum show she did promoting TI in '95 where she introduces that song and Facelift, and also does a beautiful acoustic Song for Sharon at the end. Very entertaining show. It took awhile, but I became quite fond of Taming the Tiger. I find it a mature, wistful set of songs. btw, you can get the Joni cds 68-79 box set brand new for $34 on Amazon for that special niece of nephew for Christmas. There are people who haven't been fans of hers for 30 years that might enjoy it. I liked her Beginning of Survival compilation. I bought that even though I had everything on it. I like the sequencing of it. There are people who if they have a lot of disposable income will buy anything. I bought a lot of Joni stuff over the years many times, now I'm missing alot of stuff, so if I want to hear something I just click on Youtube. I don't know that much about the audio and recording process. I know that when I click on Joni doing Mr. Tambourine Man with Pete Seeger (one of my favorites) it sounds great to me, like they're both in my house. I was just watching Joni's demo version of Two Grey Rooms, I never heard that before. Cool. Its interesting to be able to hear a song of hers when the music is sorted out but the words haven't come in yet. There is an interesting video of Sire of Sorrow on youtube that depicts animal suffering. The images are disturbing, but they match the music and lyrics perfectly. I'm reading this book now by Daniel Levitin called The World in Six Songs, How the Musical Brain Created Human Nature. He mentions Joni quite a bit. I guess he's something of a personal friend. The album that really needs work is the first one. Joni says in that interview in her house that she wants that album redone, but there is no money for it. I wonder if money was not an issue, could something be done to make that album sound better? Fortunately there are some live versions of those songs out there. The live version of Sisotowbell Lane is so much better to me that the studio version. I would really love to see some attention paid to that first album. I would definitely buy it. That was the reason it was cancelled, so we were told. A four hour production would require a much bigger Alberta Ballet company, but who knows? I'd so love that.
