Without knowing Joni personally, I don't see how anybody can really know if she has experienced love. When I think of love, I think of St. Francis and the lepers. B Nothing physically attractive there. Although I speak in tongues of men and angels I'm just sounding brass and tinkling cymbals Without love Love suffers long Love is kind! Enduring all things Hoping all things Love has no evil in mind If I had the gift of prophecy and all knowledge And the faith to move the mountains Even if I understood all of mysteries If I didn't have love I'd be nothing Love never looks for love Love's not puffed up or envious or touchy Because it rejoices in the truth not in iniquity Love sees like a child sees As a child I spoke as a child I thought and I understood as a child But when I became a woman I put away childish things And began to see through a glass darkly Whereas a child I saw it fact to face Now I only know it in part Fractions in me of faith and hope and love And of these great three Love's the greatest beauty Sometimes that kind of love grows out of the initial 'trick' of physical attraction.B It doesn't ever seem to have happened for Joni Mitchell but I get the feeling that she's made her peace with that.B My wish and hope for her is that she's found it with her daughter and her grandchildren. I don't know who wrote it and I don't have time to look it up right now. I think I mentioned I watched At Last last night, followed by Prithee pretty Maiden. I really enjoy having all this stuff available. Then I worked on the guitar arrangement by Sam Stone of Court and Spark on my nylon string. I don't know who sings the definitive version of any particular song, its a matter of debate, isn't it? I almost think Joni's version of At Last surpasses Etta James'. Most people would disagree. It's right up there though, for me. I think any song Billie Holiday sang was the definitive version, Gloria Estafan last year was trying to say that her version of Good Morning Heartache was as good as Billies, and I was like you must be kidding. You should go back to your Miami congo stuff. Joni's version of Summertime is great, partly because of the atmospheric guitar playing that goes with it. My Best to You is a song that if everyone heard at the same time they might calm down. 25% of Americans believe the sun goes around the earth, but if they just listened to Hejira, they would realize the earth goes around the sun. I'm starting to ramble now, so I am going to go on a very long bike ride. Cheers from NE Ohio. If you open up the competition to EVERY song she recorded, it'd be hard to top "At Last". I am wondering what Joni song ya'll would recommend to me as a song to dance to at my son's wedding Nov. 22nd? Ideas? I'm thinking Shades of Scarlett Conquering so far...
