It was recorded on June 1 this year in Carlsbad, CA and many members of the JMDL were in the full-house audience. The band, featuring guest lead guitar phenomenon Jamie Kime (one of the charter members of Zappa Plays Zappa), and bassist Kevin Hennessy, performed Jonis 1976 masterpiece with mastery and deep attention to the textures and poetic landscapes of the original, but we added some extended solos for Jamie to take some tunes to dizzying heights. We filmed the show for what was to have been a DVD release but the licensing costs were prohibitive so we decided on an audio CD and some selected Youtubes of the show instead. The first three Youtubes are up now at http://tinyurl.com/o46267p for your viewing pleasure. For best picture quality click on the settings cogwheel and set the resolution to 720p. To order the CD, recorded and mixed lovingly by yours truly, visit Robins website http://www.robinadler.com/products.html They are $20 via PayPal for one CD and $10 for a second or third one, all taxes and shipping included. Note: we will not be selling this on iTunes, Amazon or via streaming services; it is only available direct from us (so we have a fighting chance of breaking even someday.) For the benefit of recently joined listers, Mutts of the Planet was formed in late 2005 to perform Jonis music exclusively, and has performed a string of sold-out concerts and jazz festivals in the nine years that followed. We released, in 2010, Safaris to the Heart: The Songs of Joni Mitchell, and in 2012 a 90 minute concert DVD of Blue and Court and Spark, with guest bassist Max Bennett who asked us if he could play with us. During those nine years we have learned and performed close to 100 of Jonis songs from every period of her work, and presented Blue, Court and Spark, For the Roses and Hejira in their entirety; we will be tackling Mingus this Nov 8th at Dizzys in San Diego. Along the way, I have personally transcribed dozens of Jonis tunes (mainly the piano pieces which had never been adequately done before) including a personal Mt. Everest, Paprika Plains. All of these are free for anyone to download and study at http://jonimitchell.com/music/piano.cfm And, best of all, during those nine years we have made many friends on this list, met many of you in person and been welcomed into homes as guests in the US, the UK and Denmark. Thanks to all of you for the gift of your friendship and for your enthusiastic support our Mutts project since its inception. Our goal has always been to honor the music of this one great composer, keep it live in front of audiences now that Joni herself doesnt perform, and sometimes to add our own arrangements and perspectives to a body of work that is in many ways the classical music of our generation. best wishes to us all, Dave and Robin. p.s SMOE usually eliminates all my apostrophes, so sorry about that - as a former English major it pains me to read what appears at the other end! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Sep 2014 16:35:30 -0700 From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers 196 - I don't know where they're coming from Happy Saturday (or Sunday) all! Just got back from a little roadtrip so I'm late in posting but still made my deadline...here's another BRAND spanking new CD's worth of Joni covers, featuring oodles of great tunes. A 3-fer from The Netherlands' Brenda Frans, including a "Passion Play" that's so good I kick off the disc with it. Starts out as a copy and goes off in a whole 'nuther way. A 5-peat from Ann Moss including The Arrangement which is also rarely tackled, a couple more from Joni tributes, including Stevie's version of Woodstock that was never released and many more complete the set. Most of these (except for the tribute selections are from 2013). https://www.yousendit.com/download/ZUczUWVncG83N0RtcXRVag 1. Brenda Frans - Passion Play 2. Brenda Frans - River 3. Brenda Frans - A Case Of You 4. D. Reach and M. Scott - Both Sides Now 5. Henry Mancini - The Circle Game (Main Title) 6. Tierney Sutton - Blue 7. Stevie Wonder - Woodstock 8. I was absolutely mesmerized by the mastery all the assembled Mutts exhibited throughout the YouTube clips. Along with Robin, of course, the ability of the musicians to capture the nuances and complexity of the Hejira pieces left me nearly breathless. This is truly amazing work for which you are all to be congratulated and admired. Needless to say I ordered the disc and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. Bravo!!!
