I wanted to address the topic of the event for Wayne Shorter and the cost of a ticket. I work in the field of fundraising. That was an interesting transition for me 16 years ago when I went from being all "I treat every person equally" to having to treat donors as special. I remember talking to myself about how I would need a major attitude adjustment. What I have learned since then is that fundraising is hard work, and that with so many "noble causes" out there each cause needs to use every tool in the fundraising arsenal. Some people don't want anything to do with going to people's parties, while others love to participate in a fundraiser. I like to think of it as giving people an alternative to spending their money in the for-profit world. You can go spend $X to go out for an evening of dinner and music, or you can spend $X+$Y and go to a fundraiser, get fed and entertained, and know that a portion of the money you spent that night goes to a cause you care about. I realize that some folks live on the financial edge and cannot afford to do something like attend a fundraiser. But a great percentage of us can and do give a bit of our money away for causes we care about. And even though rich folks have a lot and one might think they should just fund whatever need is presented to them, the truth is that they get hit up every which way and even they have to be careful about how they fund those causes. I personally think it is great that this event is happening for WS. It sounds like a very special night, and if I could I would s-t-r-e-t-c-h myself to attend. I hope there are enough people who buy tickets to sell it out and raise oodles of money for the WS project. And I am delighted to know that Ashara will be there, thus giving us the inside scoop on the event. My $.02. Joni attended the awards ceremony in 1975 when she had multiple nominations and won 1 award. (3/1/75). She attended the Grammys in 2001 and both presented an award as well as winning for "Best Traditional Pop Vocal". (2/21/01) I may have missed some but there are some notable appearances. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Sep 2014 10:08:34 -0700 From: Mary Subject: Female empowerment JR & JM First, I am in awe of all you regular posters, musicians, writers, performers and all, you are all well spoken & write nicely. I don't know how to make this into a good paragraph, but the passing of Joan Rivers & all the info on her available these last couple of days & her insistence on being the best & doing it her way & having her own opinions & not apologizing for them, illuminated for me, an aspect of Joni Mitchell that has never bothered me, frankly, but seems much more understandable in the light of her career choices. Even though Joni (in her book) didn't enjoy performing, she was out there doing it alone, knew she had a gift, booked her own gigs, worked up from the bottom and learned the recording business and had to toot her own horn a lot to even get noticed. Malka's book on Joni is very illuminating, putting familiar quotes & stories into fuller context, leaning heavily on the experience of it all. I am almost halfway through it & the discourses on philosophy and depression & the creative muse are pretty deep conversations and I just put it down & pace myself, so I can really ingest it all. Having followed her music ever since Blue, you know everything she puts down for us is real, we knew it then, we know it now, so it's not surprising she was dealing with so much inner turmoil. You can almost hear her bleed on FTR. Just glad to be alive to grow up with Joni & her music. GREETINGS FROM THE TRIPLE M Down a gravel road, where the barb wire meets the sky. MARY M.
