Sorry for the inconvenience. Anyway, I won't be there either. I can fully imagine that Joni struggles with small-talk and adulation for something that is in her past and probably made up only a small part of what preoccupied her. So it was merely a wish that she would want to break her normal pattern. But thinking of "people's parties" I can't imagine that she would respond much differently to such an occasion. There's nothing that seems to upset people as much as responding to their words as if they were meant sincerely. So if she did go it would probably be to remind herself of what she already knows. Listen to your peers. She has made almost every decision along the way by herself. Read the biographies. She is amazingly headstrong and has been since childhood. She likes her privacy. Joni is not a sunny hippy chick. She blocked a video of her appearance at Carnegie Hall. She blocked a live album of it too. She blocked a tribute album of top shelf talent. She blocked a biographical movie. There is a pattern here. Joni famously said, "Hip is a herd mentality." There is a lot in that sentence but it takes effort to unpack it. She does not "go with the flow". She blocked a hits package for THIRTY YEARS! If a bunch of strangers wanted to gather to fawn over me for work I did forty years ago, when I was a completely different person, Id be horrified. Conversely, Joni likes official admiration and believes she is everything her biggest fans believe she is (or was) and that the industry press never really understood HOW great she was. Im afraid she might be the absolute least likely person to attend a fan gathering, and slightly less a concert of her music, since she has attended a couple that we know of. I've often thought it would be fun to transcribe these moments and preserve them on the website. Here's the first example: read her long intro to "Come To The Sunshine" from November of 1966: http://jonimitchell.com/music/song.cfm?id=276 (below the lyrics) If anyone has transcribed any of these moments (Kakki did the arbutus tree thing years ago, no?) please send them to me (referencing dates and other necessary info) and I'll put them online.
