I was wondering if anyone has heard of or perhaps created for themselves any guitar arrangements for "Court and Spark"? If not, I think it could be an interesting project for me to try out. I've done arrangements before but most of them just "come to me." Perhaps some of you more skilled arrangers could give me some pointers on choosing the proper tuning, etc.? I concentrated more on the instruction portion than the playing portion in this video since Joni's fingerpicking style on this song is STELLAR! My goal with these videos is to make Joni's guitar style more accesible, so more people can enjoy playing this beautiful music. Also, on the youtube site, I'm asking, if you enjoy these videos, please donate to JoniMitchell.com. Many thanks to Marian Russell for her wonderful tab of ITIU! Bob, Great linkage. Leonard Cohen as Jesus. Funny stuff. Sue, You make an insightful point about this religious writer seeing what they need to see in the song. While reading the article I became convinced as well. It's a strong argument .. if you haven't paid as much attention to Joni as we all have. This bit: Just before our love got lost you said "I am as constant as a northern star" And I said "Constantly in the darkness Where's that at? If you want me I'll be in the bar" reminds me now of the opening to River: It's coming on Christmas They're cutting down trees Putting up reindeer Singing songs of Joy and Peace I wish I had a river I could skate away on. The Girls Like Us writer attributed River to Nietzche's idea of melting the frozen river inside & accepting ourselves as God -- giving ourselves credit for our brilliance. I need to read him myself. I'm not 100% on this understanding. Anyway these both *could* express the idea: I wish I had a God but I don't so I'll turn to myself. It's an interesting theory but it may be forced and Joni could be thinking of something else entirely. I have a strong image of Joni sitting, writing, strumming and tuning into a plane that not a lot of people access. She's said, 'there were times I couldn't hit a wrong note' to describe the channeling she did. She's unable to be hypnotized bc she's always open and receptive. For me, this is truly spiritual: to receive and pass on beauty and wisdom from beyond. It feels the most pure of all the practices we've got. I can see how Christians could feel pretty frustrated with her. Lots of Joni, Shari On Jul 5, 2013, at 6:14 AM, "Susan E. I'm sure I'll draw flames for this (oh, maybe the flames of hell?) but I don't see a huge gap between the weird interpretations of overly religious people and the rants of people in the midst of a psychotic episode. Charles Manson interpreted the Beatles song "Helter Skelter" as some sort of coded reference to a call for racial wars, and look how that ended up. Thanks, blogwriter, for "knowing" what Joni needs. Somehow I doubt Joni feels (or "knows") that she needs to go to confession. She hates being labelled a confessional artist! (Mwa ha ha!) In the past, Joni has said (and I'm only relying on my memory for this) that she's a little bit Christian, a little bit Jewish, a little bit Buddhist, maybe more. She also uses native spirituality in her interpretations of "types" of people in the world (the medicine wheel). She has also said that cocaine is her god, or maybe her prayer. She would have been raised in a Christian environment (Sunday school, and I think it was the United Church) but the hospital she spent time in when she had polio was run by nuns (Catholic, I assume), so she would have been steeped in Christian beliefs. If anything, rather than the lover in "A case of you" being a Christ figure, I see it as the opposite: that this lover has replaced gods or religion in Joni's mind and that she worships him - or that she did, and they've broken apart, but she still can't get him out of her system. - ----- Original Message ----- > From: Susan E. What I find interesting is this person's interpretation of the woman who 'had a mouth like yours' as Mary, the mother of Jesus. The author writes 'Who knew Christ better than His Mother Mary?' but conveniently leaves out Joni's line 'She knew your devils and your deeds'. In this person's interpretation, the son of God, or God incarnate come down to earth has his own personal devils. I suppose the doubt that Jesus expressed in his prayers in Gethsemane could be construed as wrestling with his demons or devils but it seems like a stretch to me. There is also the temptations of the actual Devil that Jesus contends with in his 40 days in the wilderness. But 'A Case of You' talks about devils, the plural form of the word, not the actual Christian Devil. The lyric is 'she knew your devils' which is possessive and to me implies negative traits that inhabit the lover's personality and are not flaws that anyone would associate with Jesus. At least that's what I think . It just doesn't fit and isn't referred to in this person's analysis of the song. Also 'I am as constant as a northern star' is paraphrased from Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar'. Shakespeare has spoken to many souls over the centuries but I hardly think the Catholic church would look on him as even a mouthpiece for God. I wonder what this person would make of 'Passion Play'? Oy vey, Maria! I remember reading that Joni has said that she finds beauty in the teachings of Christ but that she finds beauty in other religions as well. Almost every Western writer of poetry or literature of any kind makes reference to the Bible at some point in their writing. Jewish born, ordained Buddhist monk Leonard Cohen combined Christian religious metaphors with sex in many of his songs. But they were metaphors, just that. The character 'Suzanne' was about an actual woman. She wasn't Jesus even though the second verse of the song is about Jesus. When Joni was married to Larry Klein, she said in some interview that she was probably mostly a Buddhist but that she was Jewish by injection and then she laughed. She said herself in the TimesTalk interview, I believe it was, that she is not a follower nor does she have a wish to lead. She is a musical maverick and I think she is probably also a religious maverick. She is spiritual but I don't think she would categorize her beliefs into one religion anymore than she would categorize her music into one musical genre. For anyone on Dimeadozen, one of these gigs (five songs only) has been uploaded there at http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=456314&viewcomm=6026285#comm6026285. Interestingly, she also sings "The Dowie Dens of Yarrow," which Joni sang a capella at her Philadelphia Spectrum show in 1976. An article at www.frootsmag.com discusses what has been going on with Ms McDonald over the last 30-35 years and there is a wee Joni mention. Shelagh talks about her beginnings at trying to get gigs in London, and how listening to Joni Mitchell got her writing her own songs:B b[...]I decided things werenbt going so well, and there was a summer I worked in an art shop in Camden Town.
