In a Thursday, June 27 Globe and Mail article by Brad Wheeler called "From tragedy to genius: Laura Marling's soundtrack of influence," Laura Marling names albums that influenced the making of her latest album, "Once I was an eagle." One of these influential albums is Joni's "Court and Spark." Here's the Joni part: 'Joni Mitchellbs Court and Spark (1974): bJoni is the foundation. She was the first person I ever listened to who really, really resonated with me. Since then, shebs been the go-to voice. Like her, I donbt play in standard guitar tunings. And I think her music resonates especially with females. She has a voice that hits women in the chest. Therebs an amicable vulnerability and strength at work.b' And here's the link: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/music/from-tragedy-to-genius-a-soundtrack-of-influence/article12875852/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2013 06:24:32 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Joni mention in Globe and Mail article: "Happy 80th, Wayne Shorter: The jazz world gears up to celebrate a legend" Yesterday's Globe and Mail has an article on Wayne Shorter and his upcoming 80th birthday, with a Joni mention. The article is called "Happy 80th, Wayne Shorter: The jazz world gears up to celebrate a legend" and is by J.D. Considine. Here's the Joni mention: "You know that majestic, slowly unfolding solo in the middle of the Steely Dan song Aja? Thatbs Wayne Shorter. "The same year he made that cameo, Shorter was invited by Weather Report bassist Jaco Pastorius to play on the sessions for the Joni Mitchell album Don Juanbs Reckless Daughter. Mitchell had been a fan of Shorterbs music since hearing Nefertiti b bItbs a very unusual piece of music,b she told journalist Michelle Mercer b and went on to use his playing on a dozen subsequent albums." http://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/music/happy-80th-wayne-shorter-the-jazz-world-gears-up-to-celebrate-a-legend/article12883098/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2013 08:35:09 -0600 (MDT) From: TheStaff@JoniMitchell.com Subject: =?UTF-8?Q?New_Library_item:_Joni_Mitchell=E2=80=99s_style_as_fe a?= =?UTF-8?Q?rless_as_her_music_in_Luminato_tribute_concert?= Title: Joni Mitchellbs style as fearless as her music in Luminato tribute concert Publication: Toronto Star Date: 2013.6.29 http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=2618 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2013 08:38:42 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers 88 - Retro ghost of covers past Happy weekend all - here's another blast from cover compilations past - Volume 88, and it's truly a mixed bag. A fun poppy 'Little Green' from Vinegar Brain, a rocking BSN from White Flag, some deep tracks and a couple of stinkolas from Ute Jeutter, who should just not be allowed to open her mouth - she is terrible. Good band backing her up, though. And we close things out with a couple of medleys, Stephen Fearing's is not so much a medley as a BSN tucked in to his song. Anyway, here's a link and a playlist - go get 'em. http://goo.gl/CnSEl 1. Norma Winstone with the NDR Bigband - Big Yellow Taxi 2. Jin Uruyama - Both Sides Now 3. Pamela Shane - Song For Sharon 4. Lizz Wright gets the gold star in my opinion but all of these are really great - even the Rufus tracks and I'm not a fan of his voice. The band was razor sharp and so well-rehearsed. Tight and loose at the same time. Love the arrangement of "If" and Liam in general, very Sting-ish. Lizz Wright - you have my permission to do a full album of Joni. (She did a studio version of "Fiddle And The Drum" on Danilo Perez' record several years back.) I can only imagine what the vibe must have been listening live, surrounded by fellow JMDLers. These will all be included in a future covers volume.
