I read an interview somewhere, many dim years ago, with Joni about this visit. She said that they took appropriate gifts with them, wanting to show some respect and engender a
fun time. It might have been smoke and wine, but, given the period, it might have been cocaine too.  She seemed deliberately cagey about the gifts. Now that I've read that a cop drove her to see him, I'm not sure at all. 

BTW, she changed his name slightly.
