Joni's smokes on the table. :-) https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10200482410277614&set=p.10200482410277614&type=1&theater If you read thru the posts on her facebook page you'll see the questions to Amy Sky's answers below and her conversations with Joni. "Christopher Thomas played bass. He and the rest of the band were fluid, inventive and powerful. Brian's playing was astonishing. Joni and I were talking about what a joyous player he is to both hear and watch- and I mentioned that I saw him singing along with the performers. She agreed that having a drummer so connected to the lyrics was rare and that is what makes his playing so intuitive- and that he and the band watch her shoulder blades as she moves so they can anticipate and support her phrasing. Here is the band line up : Brian Blade and Jon Cowherd (featuring Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet), Brian Blade (drums), Melvin Butler (saxophone), Jon Cowherd (piano & keyboards), Bill Frisell (guitar), Jeff Haynes (percussion), Marvin Sewell (guitar), Christopher Thomas (bass)." "Yes Joni sung! She wasn't expected to- she started off reciting a rhythmically phrased new poem called "This Rain", accompanied by the band. She said wrote it while at her home in BC. It was based on some of painter Emily Carr's own writings- but as Joni said" She made them rhyme". Then she sung "Furry Sings the Blues" and "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow". Then all of the guest performers came on stage, to join her for " Woodstock". Her voice was smoke soaked- she reached for a cigarette onstage the moment she finished her third song! But her delivery is still brilliant, and inimitable, and she moves to the music with the grace of a much younger woman. Backstage she bemoaned having lost her higher register, and said she missed being able to leap up to high notes for emphasis. But then she said, she just finds new lower notes to make her point!"
