I was thinking throughout the Sondheim that we saw (Merrily We Roll Along, which I really enjoyed, and glad you brought me along as I don't usually do musicals) that really Joni should compose musicals. (well, she's need a libretto, I guess, otherwise we might be presented with "I hate the music business" the musical) but her composition for voices is something to be admired. I've just heard "This Rain, This Rain" and I wonder what on earth she would do with it, to float above and weave within that arrangement. I know the sound quality may not be the best given the acoustics and the fact I'm listened to it on my phone, but it was really that stretched jazz, where I get left aching for a melody, but I was listening to her words and imagining a melody, and this could have possibly been her most singer-friendly of songs. But that's just me wanting it to be, wanting her to sing. It may take a few listens but I have a feeling she'll be confounding the critics again soon.
