I was dozing off for my post-golf nap to Showtime, which had a movie called People Like Us (2012) playing. Kind of a chick flick, I would say. Story of a 30ish man and his half-sister, whom he never knew existed until his ne'er do well record producer father died. In his will, the producer left $150k in cash in a toiletry case to the half-sister (Elizabeth Banks), to be delivered by the half brother (so that they could meet each other). The son has financial troubles, so things get a bit tricky along the way. Turns out the son's mother (Michelle Pfeiffer) had found out about her husband's second family, and given him an ultimatum - us only, or not us. The father abandoned the other family, and later divorced Pfieffer (so the son hated him, of course). Anyway, while the son is confronting the mother (Pfeiffer) about his discovery, the conversation diverts to how the mother had met the father. She was 17 - a receptionist, or somesuch, who had come to LA because of Joni Mitchell. She wanted to be like Joni Mitchell - she could sing, after all. She wanted to meet Joni Mitchell. And, through the producer, she did eventually meet Joni, and Stevie Nicks, etc. Anyway, if this somehow was not known to the "Joni mentions" archivists here on the list, I thought I would note it for the record. Bobsart PS - a few good songs also grace the movie - Tangled Up in Blue, and a piece by Charles Mingus (I forget the name).
