I bought '21' some time ago and I think I have listened to it more than any cd by a 'new' artist than I have in years. Now I feel somewhat validated. Nice melodies, a unique voice and no gimmicks. I saw her on 60 minutes and her straight-forward manner won me over almost immediately. The more I listen to her, the more I like her. She's almost like a throw-back to soulful singers who just put it out there and didn't feel the need to all out-do Aretha or something. Dusty Springfield keeps popping into my head when I hear or see her. It's a beautiful voice but it has just a little bit of a rasp on some notes that make it ring even more true. Plus she's beautiful. She doesn't have the figure of a supermodel and doesn't care. She is who she is and seems to be comfortable with it. Stands and lets her vocal talent carry her without hopping around in outlandish costumes on a stage with a lot of things exploding or on fire. That being said, I was somewhat underwhelmed by her performance of 'Skyfall' on the Oscars show. The orchestra seemed to be overpowering her when she was singing in her lower register. I was happy to see her win the award, but I didn't think the song was particularly great. Fine for the theme of a James Bond movie, though. Maybe I need to hear the studio recorded version of it. I have to confess, I haven't seen the movie. Quite a feat, and I think it speaks to the fact that when there's a great voice singing great songs, there's still a sizable audience and market for it. And finally thought, hey, there are some dissonant chords in there too. Probably why I like it. Love that Adele doesn't trick it up with a lot of vocal gymnastics, just sings it straight and lets her beautiful voice shine through.
