It was really a well organized evening. I was lucky to have my charming Joni friend Lindsay Moon alert me, and accompany me to, the event. We met FAR-Westers Susie Glaze, Steve Rankin and Rob Carlson of the Hi Lonesome Band in line (http://www.susieglaze.com/). The Saban is a beautiful old Art Deco theater. Steve and Judy looked great - Steve was looking trim and fit - even more so when they switched out the over-stuffed chairs. Lindsay mentioned his creakiness, and I have to agree. They spoke back and forth for about 50 minutes, then answered questions for another 15, then went to the book signing. My dulcimer guru Richard Farina actually got more mentions than Joni, though, as the article says, Judy sang a verse and chorus of Both Sides, Now. (http://www.scpr.org/blogs/newmedia/2013/02/05/12418/judy-blue-eyes-collins-sweet-conversation-stephen-/) They both sang various lines from different songs to illustrate points in the conversation, and managed to get through a verse and chorus of Tom Paxton's Last Thing On My Mind at the end. Memorable quotes from Steve: "Judy was the first person to make Leonard Cohen songs intelligible" (or maybe it was "understandable") and, when asked about the Spanish lyrics at the end of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. "The sixties were about nothing if not free association", explaining that he just wanted to rap about Cuba. A very fun evening and a great way to do a book-signing event. *************************************************** Steve Dulson Costa Mesa CA FAR-West (Folk Alliance Region - West) tinkersown@ca.rr.com www.far-west.org ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2013 #221 ***************************** ------- To post messages to the list, sendtojoni@smoe.org.
