I was thrilled when I read that Joni's favorite SD album was Gaucho, because that was always my fav. I know a lot of people don't put that one in their top SD list. Well, Bob, since you ask, I'd say something like Edith and the Kingpin or Harry's House is straight up Steely Dan, harmonically and lyrically. Just think of Fagen's voice (at least his former voice - it's pretty shot now) singing "he tilts their tired faces gently to the spoon." Add to that the fact that, in the mid 70s, Joni and SD were using a lot of the same musicians: Larry Carlton, Victor Feldman, Tom Scott, Chuck Findley, and Wilton Felder, off the top of my head. So even their records sounded similar. And, as I have written before, there is even a specific chord, called the Major 9 (no 3rd) ex. G with a C bass, that Joni more or less pioneered in pop/rock music and it became a staple of Fagen and Becker's writing a couple of years later. I can well imagine them as fans of Joni's and being heavily influenced by her harmonic and lyrical innovations. What they brought to the table was an R&B funk bed that Joni didn't exploit much, although the L.A Express sort of funkified a few things on their own - Love or Money, for example. I remember reading somewhere that Joni admired Steely Dan's music too, so it was rather a mutual admiration society. This is a good thread to pursue as there are lots of overlaps between the two artists. Not sure there's ONE that jumps out as a good fit for them. Supposedly they recorded "Carey" for that record but that's been a rumor, not sure that it REALLY happened despite what this article says. > > Bob------------------------------------------------------------ > The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity > to which it is addressed and may contain proprietary, > business-confidential and/or privileged material. > If you are not the intended recipient of this message you are hereby > notified that any use, review, retransmission, dissemination, > distribution, reproduction or any action taken in reliance upon this > message is prohibited.
