It was hosted by a young couple that we had met at another musical event. This was a small affair (only 9 of us) in a tiny living room. The age range was 24-62. Rather than this being a jam where everyone brings out their guitars the hosts had a plan. One guitar and a bowl to be passed around filled with theme ideas written on small pieces of paper. To our delight we opened our paper and in very small print it said "your favorite artist". We chose the song Hejira. Throughout the night we played several songs by different artists but we played predominately Joni tunes. At the end of the night the 24 year old named Kenny (hot little guitar player) came up to us and said he'd never heard Joni Mitchell and that he wanted to buy some of her recordings. Dave recommended starting with "Hejira" and going back from there. Several others from the party also said they would like to buy some of her albums as they were only familiar with songs from "Blue" or the song "Both Sides Now". None of the people knew the Hejira album. My musical path has led me to Joni and it's her world I've been in for the last 8 years along with my husband/accompanist Dave. Sometimes the line "you imitate the best and the rest you memorize" pops into my head and I get down on myself because I am not a songwriter and I'm just a singer. But last night when that young aspiring musician came up to me and said he wanted to buy some Joni albums I felt excited. He got it and that makes me happy.
