Willy has been done to good effect by Patrick Wolf - the video of it is readily available - I'm thinking he changes the line from "lady" to "lover"...sometimes those gender lyrical changes work OK and sometimes they don't...and that's a whole other issue. Richard Isen also recorded Willy from a male perspective and made the same word switch. It would be weird for a man to sing that lyric as written. Then again Tom Waits makes a credible hooker in Minneapolis... As for Conversation, earlier this year I saw a wonderful cabaret show in NYC with Paul & Patrick and one of the most moving performances was from a singer named Nicholas (forgot his last name) who did Conversation from the point of view of the fact that his lover is a man who was in a visible relationship with a woman but secretly in love with him. It was fascinating and put a whole other spin on a great song. More testimony to the greatness of Joni's writing and the universality of it, especially her love songs. I respect your honesty but personally I'm happy to see the changing trend. Men love men with the same emotions and intensity that women do. McNamara" , Michael Paz Date: 12/18/2013 02:29 PM Subject: RE: Retro Covers 97 - The Ghost of Covers Past Well, I personally consider the entire album Blue to be Joni's most intimate, confessional and personal songs that she wrote throughout her career., For me - Blue, A Case of You, Richard and River are tales of love and loss from a woman's' perspective. But "Blue" stands alone on this album as the ultimate expression of pain and is therefore, in my opinion, her most private of Joni's private songs. She wrote it for no one else except herself and her lover: Blue here is a shell for you Inside you'll hear a sigh A foggy lullaby There is your song from me. And the are countless others - Paz already mentioned WOHAM And what about Willie? Willy is my child, he is my father I would be his lady all my life. Conversation - She removes him, like a ring To wash her hands She only brings him out to show her friends. I Had a king - I can't go back there anymore You know my keys won't fit the door You know my thoughts don't fit the man They never can they never can So to try and answer your question Bob - its not so much the male voice that bothers me but more the message coming form a man. When I hear a man cover these types of intimate, personal and confessional songs - I sort of cringe listening to them because I just cant buy into the message when its coming from a man - it just isn't credible for me. Stewart That's an interesting comment, Stewart - what about the song makes you think that? I'm not saying it's right or wrong, just that I'm interested. Like Sue, I like a male voice on a Joni song as much as a female - haven't heard WOHAM sung by a guy so I'm not sure how that would go over. And thanks for the note, glad you gave them a listen.
