Unlike analog audio (tape and vinyl), the only sound digital audio imparts is dependent on the quality (or lack thereof) of the converters and the software code in the hardwares audio chip that defines the waveform. Upgrading the converters is easy enough, as you describe, and not too pricey. Upgrading the audio playback software code is not as easy, but as I have written before, Sonic Studio (formerly Sonic Solutions) have done this for Mac based audio. Their Amarra and Amarra HiFi apps replace the Macs Core Audio audio engine with its own code, and the results are a dramatic improvement in depth and musicality. http://www.sonicstudio.com/amarra/amarra_player Sorry for the geekspeak, but we all like our music, right?
