An outboard sound card (USB digital-to-analog-converter, or DAC) improved the sound of my headphones.  It improved the sound of my big stereo too, fitting between the laptop and the stereo. It allowed me to play back moderately high-res 96/24 downloads too.  It is a DAC that can also drives headphones in a pinch. 

When I bought a microStreamer six months ago, the competition was a $249 Audioquest Dragonfly. 

Now, a newer version of the Dragonfly (v1.2) is $149.

Amazon is selling the original Dragonfly (now called v1) for only $99.

I'm just saying.
