I *do* like much of Chalkmark, but Lakota was never my favourite-- its jangly nervous rhythm and monotonous keyboard riff always put me off. Until I heard the soulful San Remo performance and realised just how good the lyrics are. A pity we can't get to hear the initial demo tapes for all the CIAR material... Interesting that you particularly like Snakes & Ladders-- that's always been the track that I skip: clever lyrics but the musical accompaniment way too frantic for my tastes (although I can see that's appropriate to the theme of the song). I'll give it another listen now, though. (Similarly, Nothing Can be Done was always my 'bum track' on NRH, but given the recent discussion of it I need to give it another chance...). I love the hypnotic guitar line of Special Place, and the simplicity of its lyrics. And the gorgeous lushness of the Tea-Leaf Prophecy. It sounds superb on the Prairie Girl compilation, coming straight after Urge For Going ('she says I'm leaving now but she don't go'...). The Herbie H version of Tea-Leaf I want to like, but just find too dreary-- also there's a complexity lost by not including the 'Study war no more' theme. Re-Occurring Dream's another favourite, which I'd love to hear performed by an actual choir (it should still work without the collage of commercial clips). Anyway, thanks for your post!
