The blog reveals the complexity of this creation and Joni and his struggle to create a 'coherent narrative.' Maybe they both felt, in the end, that nothing could be done. This is a beautiful and haunting rendition of 'Lakota'. Without all the production and strident vocal delivery that accompanied the song on 'Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm', a beautiful melody comes through with a compassionate, heartfelt lyric. The repetition of 'pity me' still bothers me but still, with just Joni on guitar and Larry Klein on bass, this is a really nice performance. I've been thinking about 'Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm' and how it sort of gets kicked to the bottom of the pile of Joni's output. I admit, it's not my favorite. But it did produce a few songs that are gems of quality. Consider: The Beat of Black Wings The Tea Leaf Prophecy And I know these are debatable to many but I also think these are great songs: Snakes and Ladders Number One I also like The Reoccuring Dream although it isn't so much a song as a collage. A finely constructed comment on consumerism. 'The Fiddle and the Drum' ballet followed this one up with 'Ethiopa' and coming after that last 'Who cares' in 'The Reoccuring Dream' it was like having ice cold water thrown in your face. At the very end of the film (the best part, the end) a girl sings Joni's classic song in Cambodian! haha Shows how great Joni is since she is universal! I wonder if there'll ever be a record of her tunes in Greek, French, German or Italian for us someday? I've already heard Grace Jones music in French which was quite cool. In the picture of her at the side of her pool, you can see that her nails were painted a purplish color, but they are totally thrashed. Celebrities are just like us: their manicures get ruined. Also, I can't come close to bring able to afford a custom printed photo. I am seriously considering one of the art.com posters of her Vogue pic, though. Fess up. Who has a poster hanging in their bedroom?
