This interview took place on October 4, 2010, while Eric Johnson was on the road with the Acoustic Guitar Masters tour. Later that month he switched to electric guitar for the Experience Hendrix tour. His new album, Up Close, was scheduled to come out in November, featuring 14 original songs and a cover of Electric Flags Texas. While Steve Miller, Jimmie Vaughan, Jonny Lang, and Sonny Landreth made guest appearances on the album, Erics first in five years, his heartfelt singing and transcendent guitar playing remained the heart and soul of his music. Are there any songs that you love so much, that are so perfect, that you wouldnt consider covering them? I almost felt that was about [Joni Mitchells] For Free. Ive always loved that song, and I was hesitant to do it. Sometimes when you learn a song, you have to get inside the alphabet of it. And then the next time you hear it, youre more aware of what theyre doing from an alphabetical way, rather than just hearing it. Its a piece that youve got inside of. Sometimes I dont like to even decipher  Id rather just let it be an entity. What do you think about Jonis song Blue? Its great. I think all of that stuff is just so magnificent. You were talking about where it kind of comes through and it just happens. Its like electricity is looking for a place to come out, its looking for an avenue. And if it finds the right vessel, it goes down and goes into that. Those albums she did  Blue and Ladies of the Canyon and Song to a Seagull  theyre just amazing folk records. I often wondered about "Turbulent Indigo" and their break up. He said "The songs programmatically were about the dissolution of things between us."Even the paintings of her cats have a different meaning to me now. Odd is life that they both received Grammy's together for their work through a divorce...Larry saying, "To be rewarded at the end of this difficult journey with that, (Grammy Awards) was one those wonderful moments." Klein thanked Mitchell, "for 10 years of instruction in the arts." Mitchell quipped, "Gee, Klein, considering we made this album in a state of divorce"...I would also like to see the 2010 documentary "The Greatest Ears in Town: The Arif Mardin Story" chronicles the career of this formidable production figure and label executive.
