I just saw this and did not feel that James butchered the song. It was really a nice version except I guess time constraints made it necessary for him to leave out about 3/4 of the words. But all in all it was not bad at all. Is this the first time a singer has tackled one of Joni's songs on one of these singing competitions? I don't recall it on either 'The Voice' or 'American Idol'. But as Joni says, she always tried to add a touch of brightness along with the hard truth, the hopelessness, etc. The brightness of the dulcimer helped there. This one feels plain ol sad. It is my understanding that the producers have to get permission from the artist for their songs to be performed on these shows, and I have a sneaking suspicion that Ms. Mitchell has not been willing ot grant that permission. This discussion about Joni's performances here at Farm Aid and at Amnesty Concert was great reading at lunch. I was unaware of this part of her experience. I love what she said about not wanting to compete with others. It may be the kiss of death feeling that way in such an insane, hyper competitive culture but I agree. I'd rather compete with myself as well. She said people at an event like those should be aware of the issues. They were not. Very sad. Probably still true. I've been invited to perform at the Australian version of Woodstock. It's a massive music festival featuring 500 artists, set in the lush green rolling hills of south east Queensland (www.*woodfordfolkfestival*.com). It's a bloody hard festival to crack, so I'm REALLY happy! I have seven gigs including... wait for it... a Joni tribute concert gig! Here's the official blurb in the program: *LADIES OF THE CANYON CONCERT: **This year's Canadian imports - Rose Cousins, Kim Wempe and Mo Kenny, join forces with Australian favourites Leah Flanagan and Ange Takats and Scottish songstress Rachel Sermanni in a song circle that introduces their own work via a favourite work from the iconic Joni Mitchell.* I will be singing 'The Last Time I Saw Richard' - as well as two songs of my own. Anyone fancy a trip to Australia over Christmas/ New Year? If so, be sure to come to Woodford for some Joni-magic!
