I missed my dear Kakki's musings on Pablo, but I did love your reference to Evelyn "Champagne" King. My heart soared. I have seen Ms. King at least three times in the past year or so. She does small venues these days - including the Hollywood Bowl on a shared bill, but is even more effective helping to celebrate the 40th anniversary of a legendary gay bar in LA as she did just this month. Her voice is as strong as ever. She typically does a short set of past big hits mixed with new ventures into a jazz/soul fusion thing I find pleasing. As a disco child of the 70s, I love seeing one of my divas still vocally relevant and trying some new stuff. Thanks for mentioning Evelyn. She's out there still fighting the good battle for her craft and making a living with a talented husband that also makes good music. One of the few groups I saw live at a small (now demolished) theater next to a mall here.....Mill Run in Niles, IL. Chicago and Suburbs people probably remember it at the Golf Mill Shopping Center. My friend and I decided to go see them at the last minute. Can't believe we actually got tickets at the door and were escorted to the front row directly in front of them. The stage was low and so close to the seats you could reach out and almost touch them! What a thrill! Had a couple of their albums back then. Favorites (YouTube sure brought back the memories): Ocean Breeze (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZCmmQs81qE) and A Place In the Sun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u07ELwLf8Qo). Also liked Ambrosa (You're The Only Woman) and LOVED (still do) DISCO & Dance Music. Like Joni, I love to dance! I wonder what Joni used to like to dance to and got her rockin!? My favorite Disco Song (if I had to pick one) would be SHAME by Evelyn Champagne King. I could NEVER sit still when that came on!
